Dog vs bike... What to do?

i got rushed by a dog today for the first time. 3 tramps/easy lays were leaning on the power transformer over the road. saw one dog cross the road as i got the bike out. i waited till it reached the path before moving out. as i got onto the road, another dog shot out from the other side. all i saw was dark brown fur and white teeth. heard it bark too.

both the girls and the first dog had been spotted at the HNZ house this morning. [which is directly across the road] the first dog has been seen there a few times.

i called the ranger, left a message, and he never called back. my street is mainly all elderly people, with some small kids. most of us have cats. if a dog was gonna go for me, itll go for anything. luckily i pulled out faster than usual, otherwise, it would have had my foot.

when i got to work, i had a think, and maybe should have lashed out with my foot, but i think it would have done more damage to me than it. how the hell does one practise to kick a fast moving target? i will be keeping an eye on the house from now on...

Dunno what to do about the dogs themselves, but from experience, avoid them at all times, you will most likely crash, even tho your bike is much bigger than most dogs.

Best cure for the dog is to hit fast with a cage, doesn't hurt you @ all & the dog learns a valuable lesson

Where I live you have to drive/ride down a rather steep hill...

I haven't managed to take my bike out to my house yet.. Why..????? I'm too scared....

Because of a dog...

It already waits, runs out and starts trying to attack the tyres on mums car.. And I really don't wanna think what it could do if it managed to knock me off my bike.. *has shit fuck all riding experience* so that could be quite easily done.... I could do alot of damage to myself and my bike.. All because someones to half arsed to keep their mutt under control..

What would be the best option... Approach owners of said animal.. putting across your concerns... Possibly have an understanding response, and a change in the situation.... Or..... Risk having a flame of abuse hurled in my general direction...

Or...

Would you ring up the local council or dog control officer and let them know about the danger this dog risks to road users..?

Really.. What rights do you have..??

The animal is obviously not under control.. And dangerous..

Or would you just say "harden up" ride past with fingers crossed hoping it doesn't manage to latch onto your leg or bike tyre..?

pretty much. their house and the one next door are rentals. young guys in the rental. my parents and our immediate neighbours would be among the youngest, ranging 30s to 60s. everyone else is older. 2 lots of granny flats down the road, and a rest home 10 mins away. two side roads are filled with bad buggers, but they keep to themselves.

theres also a daycare and 2 primary schools... just a good thing its holidays, otherwise a kid might have been got this afternoon.

drew... yeh, that sounds like the best plan. wasnt sure if the other dog would come and join the rusher or not.

kittie... id go for the dog ranger, depending on what kind of person the owner is.

jafar... good idea if i knew how to drive. plus, itd be me charged instead.

If your dog so much as farts in Akl you get a visit from animal control.

I would be rarking them up (animal control) point out the danger to the elderly - and if no satisfaction - police them MP.

Easy...............pay out for a couple of steaks......wander down the street with said steak wafting........mmmmm.......do it just on darkness with a your riding gear on.......have a couple of bolt bombs made up....when there munching let em go.....never will they bother you again.

Funnily enough there's a bit in the Road Code about it (and I got a question on my scratch & win too). Dogs go nuts for bikes for some reason; anyway, what the Road Code says to do is to slow down as you approach it to maybe 10kph, then accelerate away fast as you get alongside it. Going at normal speed they don't get out of your way apparently.

Sounds nuts, but it works -- I can confirm this and so can others. Give it a shot.

I'd ring the council anyway. Probably stinks and carries diseases anyway.

Go and buy a bb gun,it fires little plastic balls,harmless (unless you get hit in ass close),in car if dog trots beside you wind window down and shoot pellet at it,aim for head,won't hurt it but if you get it a couple of times they piss off,will give a yelp.Bit better than shotgun lol.Mind you wait till dark as you don't want armed defenders squad visiting.Used this technique with dogs coming onto our last home,mind you our cat liked attacking them too,hide up tree and pounce on their backs and claw like crap,bloody funny to watch.

Not so, if you hit an animal(dog) thats on the road you won't get charged. You have to report it thats all.
If you hit a cat you don't need to report the strike @ all
Chasing it round the street & over the footpaths is a different story though.

dang... i reckon dog control could work.. yet if they belong to people, people should learn to take better care of their bloody dogs!!

I'm sick of farters who dont take care of their animals and then wonder why they go around biting people and attacking cars/bikes/ any small children..

HAHAHA, I have the answer... I did this ages ago when I was working at DX Mail riding a CT110... When the dog comes running up, you just pull your leg back, and gently move it towards the dogs face/nose... because your bike will be moving, moving your leg gently will allow you to 'aim' better, while still having the speed of your bike, acting as the force behind kicking the dog...

That dog chased me a few times, and the first time that I actually went to kick it (and luckily landed it the first time), was the last time the dog chased me... I saw the dog the next few days afterwards, but it seemed vary wary of me, and in no mood to run out onto the road. Lessen well learnt little doogie

kicking dogs is sad too... shouldnt be done.

I know they may be running after you.. but a bike goes faster than a dog... the dog will tire eventually... if not, get some mace or something...
