Why are the media more powerful than the courts?

why can the NZ police find nothing worth charging a man over, but the media can bring something up 7 years later and a guy loses his job over it and brings his life to a stand still,

this is not really a debate over the rights or wrongs of what happens on a league team tour, but why does the media have more power than the police and courts????????

Because the general public buys into it. You buy into the media bullshit and all you do is strengthen the hold that media has over us. People hear or read about a story, and many jumo to snap judgements based on the limited info at hand. Like all these annoying fucking bain threads that are floating around everywhere (not on here fortunately). Its quite simple, None of us were there, none of us are sitting in the courtroom evey single day, none of us know why the cops did some of the things they did, none of us know why david made some of the comments/had some of the reactions/responses he did and none of us are privvy to the private discussions held in chambers about new bits of evidence, etc etc etc. Simply, nobody fuckin knows (except david) yet some people are prepared to yell and scream and insist that they KNOW he is guilty/not guilty blah blah blah, but its based on the little tidbits of info we recieve from the media and various other sources of questionable reliability.my 2c.

The police enforce the law and courts determine that the law has been 'properly' enforced. It has nothing to do with power. The media's 'power' for want of a better word only comes with the sanction of society. Ultimatley power comes down to the values that society upholds.............no more and no less.

The issue is the "court" of public opinion, versus a court of law. A court of law administers the law, it has nothing to do with natural justice, or indeed justice of any description.

There are many things in life that we do that while not illegal are just not right and for which there are consequences.

As a society we tend to expect higher standards of conduct from public figures then we do for average Joes.

The media will report something if they believe there is general public interest. If what they publish meets with vicarious approval from their readers/viewers, they'll keep doing it.

I reckon someone should publish the whores name as well. Give her a taste of natural justice.

I love t.v news now, its not so much about whats ACTUALLY happening, its about the perspective the producers want you to see. More of a reality t.v show except without the reality part.

I realised the media had hit the bottom when they started putting stories about celebrity couples on prime time news.. That and slyly advertising private companies by talking about the recession (or is that depression now)..
