On another side note.... It's so cool when your "baby daughter" comes in to the pits from a race and says "Hey Dad, I think I need two more compression clicks on the rear shock, I think it's a bit soft" Dad dutifully complies.. Said daughter returns from next race and says much better.... So cool, she's starting to think about how the bike is reacting, not just hanging on for dear life.......(which is what she does on the bigger bike.....)

The power will be smoother than an 80, many 80's focus their power further up the rev range and they don't have the CC to provide the low down power (and a short shifting gearbox). Many 2 strokes that have a "hit" simply are not jetted correctly, usually rich down low and lean up top and you will feel a hit when they finish struggling through a poorly tuned bottom end and then clear out through the mid range, but they don't have to run like this.
As I said before, you should control the bike rather than the bikes "hit" controlling you. That way you will be more confident and able to ride faster.
Proof is in a test ride though I guess, but it sounds like any bike is going to be a compromise somewhere for you. Perhaps you should ride a quad?
Don't even mention a quad! Can't believe you said that! I will find the bike that's the least amount of compromise. Have heard a KTM125 EXC is coming up for sale. I will be test riding that for sure! Must get onto Trade Me and have a look! Ta for all comments!!!

i have the gasgas equivalent to the ktm125exc.
anytime were at the same ride, you can have a blat on that if you want midget. im not expesially tall. maybe 5' 1''ish? and i can put both feet on the ground, only 100kgs with fuel.
but the gasgas 2 strokes are renowned for being much less aggressive than the ktm btw. told that by a ktm dealer
we may just go where no ones been

oh by the way was just down at Triple X picking up a new piston for the 200 and Steve said Ktm NZ where not importing the 125exc last year but he bought 5 in and sold them real quick. So there may not be to many around 2nd hand. He's got a brand spanker in the shop now I had a sit on it! Feels like a real bike! I could sit with both feet flat on the ground with my fat arse on it but it still might need some massaging for the shorter rider. Specially if your tryin to throw your leg over it on a slope. My daughter fits her CRF150F great, seat height 826mm but the seat height on the 125exc is 985mm still might be a bit tall to fit the bill for most ladies and learners?? Pretty sure my 14 year old and 17 year old daughter wouldn't fit? So same weight as the 200exc at 97kg but 60mm taller. Be nice to have a ride and see if its as torqey as the 200? I'm not going to express an opinion I've already been told off!! LOL!!! If they bought out one with a say 850 - 870 seat heght it would steal the market I reckon!

Not sure if they can be lowered that much -Danger???

Not sure where you got your figures from and why you think the 125 is 60mm taller than the 200. I think you need your eyes seen too.

My figures came straight off the ktm NZ website
    Here http://www.ktm.co.nz/bike.php?bike=89
and here http://www.ktm.co.nz/bike.php?bike=88 Click on "show Specifications"

My eyes are fine!!!! and so is the seat of my pants when I sat on it! It felt taller compared to my 200!

yes it is but the question was can it be lowered a full 100+mm from 985mm to say 850-870mm.
    asked here

It doesn't have a linkage to extend so it was a genuine question??
Can a KTM 125exc at 985mm seat height be lowered to fit someone shopping for a KX85 or CRF150R which are both around the 860-870 mark?

but if they have the same chassis how can they be 80mm different in hight?

    btw
bikez lists them both at 985mm

Dunno Noobi you choose Ktm or Bikez?? The 125exc Felt taller to me???

My user manual I have open in front of me definatly says 925mm.

I'd go with the official Ktm site and specs if I had to choose!

But when I get the wheels back on mine in a few hours I'll get the tape out and post

    Yeah don't trust the specs.

I would not advise lowering any bike 100mm, its just about trying to limit the compromises. Often once we have a rider on board they are surprised how a little makes a big difference. But being only slightly taller than a Hobbit does bring up some more difficulty's in getting it all to work good with a minimum amount of compromise. The fact it has no linkage makes it a better candidate for lowering rather than pulling a linkage into a stiffer part of the progression or using one of those dangerous (no relation) lowering links. And in the KTM's a shorter fork spring would be needed in Midgets case as well. So its an added cost regardless and needs to be factored into the cost and the budget. The cheaper option would be an 80cc no doubt but is that the compromise that Midget wishes to make? More than likely the big bummed one would need heavier springs for the 80cc anyway. Thats why I suggest she try Caryn's bike before deciding for herself which path to take, seeing if Caryn's bike is close enough or if it needs more. I have no idea what sort of budget she is on. For some this is a factor, for others it is not.

well fair enough, im not argueing, just showing what the bike encyclopedia states
but then again it also states that the 08 200 and 125 are both 960mm http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/ktm_200_exc_2008.php
    http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/ktm_125_exc_2008.php
and your 08? manual says 925mm
ill sit on the 125exc when i go to triplex tomorrow, and see if it feels much taller than my 945mm gasgas
we may just go where no ones been

Midge would suit a 125 exc. Trouble is its not a cheap option so you really have to nick Karens one for a ride.It probably doesn't get into the power band too often so thats a good reflection of how easy it is too ride.

Me, I'd be waiting to see what models come out 2010. Who knows there may be a surprise(this is not a heads up).
