    Any vegetable growers in here?

If so tell me about Yams, heard there easy to grow, once you got em you cant get rid of them etc so rather than have them running rife through the vege garden have got a big old wheelbarrow that ive painted up,drilled some holes in the bottom of and will grow them in there. All set up off down to the Warehouse to pic up some seeds i go women down there says shes never seen Yam seeds in her life,i ask her if there like spuds and you just wait for them to start sprouting etc then plant, shes got no idea but logic would suggest thats the deal.So do you put them in dark place etc like spuds then plant them or just put them in?Any sensible replys appreciated, others only if there funny.

Just watch the frosts - they like warm soil

I love yams... mmmmmmmm tasty lil buggers roasted!

I'd say that if you plant them now, you'll probably just get small tubers and they'll be stalky with very little if nothing to show for it. Best wishes though...

Yams are just like spuds. Wait until they begin to sprout in late winter/early spring, then plant the tuber. Space them in the same way as potatoes and mound. Good idea of yours to plant in an old wheelbarrow so they don't spread in your garden. Once you have yams you always seem to have them, yes hard to get rid of. I think they are really nice roasted. Cheers

Your on the money for getting ready to plant them, but your a little too early.
They are best planted in Spring (they hate frost) Say October or November for CHCH.
They are like a spud, they'll die when the frost hits them, this is when you harvest them, once the first frost hits them they start to die and this is when you dig em up

They grow about two feet tall like a spud bush, cept they are more up-right.
They like a sunny, well drained, no wind location.

Where do you get them from?
Get the largest tubers you can get from a supermaket, i.e. the fruit & veg section, put em inside or away from the cold, wait till they sprout (again like a spud) then when it's time push em in the ground about 70mm deep (round bit towards the top) and cover them with soil. Keep molding them up like spuds, that's it really.

Be warned dig em all up or you'll be over run by the dam things next year

Dammit. I knew I it was a risk when I hit the "reply" button. I didn't realise it was that much of a risk.

I think yams require perfect growing conditions. I sell yams at my wotk place and most we ever see come from a grower in Fielding.
