Interesting topic. I am a freelance contractor (Public relations/ communications / writing) and I have mixed feelings about the whole working from home thing.
I work from one of my clients' offices in Glenfield for 14 hours a week (2 short days). I actually enjoy getting dressed up a bit 'corporate' on those days (under my bike gear) and heading out of the house. I also really enjoy the half-hour ride to work and half hour (or more) ride home each day. I have also been known to get on the motorway and just keep on riding and end up in Orewa or somewhere drinking coffee because it was just a great day for a ride! As long as I make up the total hours (and don't miss any meetings!) it's all fine.
On the other hand, I also love the days when I work for other clients and work from home. It gives me the flexibility to pop out for a hair cut, or do some grocery shopping, or whatever I need to do during the day without having to make excuses to anyone.
BUT (and it's a big but) you absolutely have to have self discipline. I was earning a huge amount more when I was working a standard 40 hour week for another consultancy. Being perfectly honest, I rarely work a full 40 hour week when I'm working from home. And sometimes I procrastinate badly and have to work half the night to meet a deadline - purely self-inflicted.
My ideal situation would be either:
- Work for someone else 4 days a week and have a day just for myself, or
- Work from a shared office space so I would actually leave home, go to the office and work, then go home at the end of the day. If there were shared areas (lunch rooms, meeting rooms etc) I could fulfil my 'social' needs, while also having a private office space to go and work hard.
There is no such thing as bad weather; only inappropriate clothing!
yup that about sums it up for me as well, though a lot of coffee shops here have free wifi and I can go there ,,,
Also try not speaking to anyone for a week! ( or the time you are at home alone , you will hear me pop up on the national program sometimes when I email Jim !

Well done Nigel, hope that you continue to enjoy it!
Since I retired and started consulting back to my old company, I've largely worked from home too, but have found that apart from missing general office banter, you do lose touch a bit by missing out on some of the "nuances" that float around a business. Hopefully, they won't need me much longer so I can do stuff I want to do, when I want to do it!
Anyway, I thought I'd share my first week of consulting from home with you and hope you don't have similar experiences. I was bunkered down in what passes for my office, concentrating hard on some legal documents when I heard muffled cries upstairs from my wife. She'd been stripping wallpaper in a bedroom, had cracked open a window and the aluminium frame had parted from the hinges - the pop rivets had let go! She was leaning out of the window, hanging onto the handle to stop it dropping onto the concrete below whilst calling for help. Managed to lean over her and retrieve it, but then had to get a ladder and pop rivet it back on in steady drizzle. No more paid work that day, concentration shot and totally pissed off!
But wait, there's more.....
Two days later, Jennie comes into the "office", saying she needed me urgently. Wasn't a happy camper at being disturbed again but why she needed me defied belief - her grey psychopath of a cat had caught a live and extremely agitated pheasant in the bush behind our place and dragged it through the cat flap whereupon it proceeded to thrash its way round the dining room and lounge, shitting everywhere and knocking things over. That caused a fairly sharp exchange but we both saw the funny side (eventually).
May you continue to work uninterrupted mate!![]()
Up your bum!
LOL nothing so exciting for me I'm afraid. I got the back room of the Garage lined, cleaned out and set up as the office (which is where I sit right now). No pheasants, no broken windows (no windows at all in fact) but there's a dae mouse on the path outside if that counts?
The banter continues on the phone - video and VoIP so that's all good, but the problem I'm finding is leaving the office. Too easy to just pop out for 5 emails or whatever.
Overall - very positive.
