The National Trust in in England has a somewhat different approach where the main concern seems to be the wellfare of the dogs should they get lost or chased by farm animals.

Plus you can't take them in central Welly, on the buses or trains. Rant over
I'm not trying to be a smarty-pants but why (oh, why) would you tour with a pet? Leave it behind, set yourself free.

...which makes it most satisfying when telling said nanny's to fuck off...although in honesty, I havent needed to do this often. Most times people see that you're not one of the walking dead and leave you to it, dogs'n'all. The ones that do have an issue usually dont have an answer to the "fuck off" response

Funny you say that,an earlier post made me think why the fuck would anyone that lived in a city own a dog, stay there if you must but dont condemn a dog,set it free.

Indeed, fuck those silly birds... if they forgot how to fly they deserve to be eaten by all those cute imported pets!

Jokes aside, mountain bikes (much less motorised ones) aren't welcome in national parks either... not even if they don't eat the local wildlife.

Yeah, exactly. I have a brother who did the whole hippy thing down in Golden bay, bought land, got a dog, raised animals for food etc. Then he moved to Orks (go figure) and lived in an apartment. Fine.

    BUT!

He goes and gets himself another dog, ffs, and here's this so-called 'lover of all things free' with this poor, god-forsaken mutt in a concrete jungle.

    Some people just need rooting.

Mate! Those things need running twice a day at least, if not ALL day. I'm no canine expert but I like it doggy-style. (That's giving, not recieveing....)

I also have the ability to entertain myself but that's not what life's about, eh?

My daughter and son-in-law got a Papillion x Sydney Silky and have the same problem. He's a wee little house dog but she exercises him every day. There are some motels and backpacker places that will allow pets but not too many.

Suspect most stray dogs on DOC land could be both lost pig dogs or strays abandoned/lost.The pig dogs might leave kiwis alone(at first) as they're taught to target pigs, not rabbits, birds, goats. But if hungry who knows, most domestic strays would probably hunt/eat anything.

Then DOC and henchmen/kaftan wearing twats discover a rare type of plant growing in a block of land,so we can't camp there.DOC do a pretty good job at times,1080 drops not one of them.

The upshot of this is, if you are camping on road reserve NP rules do not apply. Even if the DOC managed camp site is on road reserve.

The only exception is local council bylaws in certain areas.

What ever you chose to do, keeping the dog under control in the park areas would make sense....
Hey now that's useful. I'll check on it, cheers

    Angry

Used to take my previous German Shepherd deer stalking with me. Nowwhen you hunt on DOC land you need to have your dog 'avian aversion' trained. Costs $120 from memory...
( Won't chase birds ) Problem is I live in Auk's, and the nearest trainer is
Napier. And you need a refresher cert each year. Pain in the ass. I can understand why DOC wants it, but your average pigdog that gets lost or wanders onto DOC land ain't gonna be aversion trained, anyway I'll just keep taking the Prozac and I'm sure it'll all be ok........
