I used to be keen on Nucelar power till I saw the price/Megawatt, and realised it was very expensive.

So I think we'll stick to nice cheap Hydro + Natural power generation systems.

"Cheap" depends on how you value them. The cost of construction isn't the true cost. Nuclear may be an option once the Guardians of the Waikato River decide that the dams have to go so that they can have their river back the way it was.

I can't remember quite where, I think it was something like the NZ Energy Commission released a report showing the $/MW for the different kinds of power plants.

Nuclear power plants were extremely capital intensive, and the disposal costs of the used uranium was very high. So even though they were relatively cheap to run, the pre and post investment made them one of the most expensive sources of power.

The Chinese style power plants are much cheaper to build, but the same disposal cost.

The French have really done a great job with there plants, especially when it comes to re-refining the used uranium, but once again, the capital cost is huge to get it all going. In their case, they have lots of plants.

The other kicker is there isn't that much uranium left in the world. I think the report said there was around 75 years worth at the current rate of consumption. After that there we'll have to do very expensive refining.

Jantar and K14 (both of them are energy traders) have repeatedly exposed the ability of NZ's grid to effectively transmit nuclear power and also that there is, as yet, no commercial nuclear power plant of sufficiently low capacity to be inserted into NZ's grid. Our lowest draw is around 110MW at 5:30am. The smallest safe commercial reactors are 350MW. They don't have a rheostat built in, they're either on or off.

In terms of kiwis ever crying enough, you know it won't happen Mr D'marge. The current thread about bike parking in Wellington demonstrates the average Kiwi's response to anyone in authority telling them that the authorities are here to help.
