I had my prostate taken out on the 20th of August and am currently at home recuperating - riding the hayabusa is out of the question until the end of this month.
December last year I had a regular check with the GP which included blood tests. The test result showed an elevation in the PSA from previous tests and this indicated a biopsy should be done.
In February I had a prostate biopsy. Not that pleasant - probe up the bum and 12 little core samples taken of the prostate. The result came back a month later and was inconclusive - two samples had PIN which are precancerous cells and or the biopsy samples missed cancerous cells. Three months later another biopsy and the result was early stage prostate cancer.
We had a holiday planned of 5 weeks to UK and Europe so we headed off on that knowing the best option for me was to have the prostate removed (radical prostatectomy). On return from holiday a booking was made for surgery. The removed prostate has since been analyzed and it appears the cancer was contained within the prostate. This news is as good as it gets.
My prostate cancer was caught early because I had 6 monthly visits to the doctor and my PSA levels were monitored. While there are life changing side effects to the operation the alternative was to die early and in pain from prostate cancer. I had the opportunity to make a choice because of regular check ups with my GP.
Guys if you are over 40 make an appointment for a health check and then schedule them for every 6 months. If you don't have the tests (PSA blood test and a doctor's finger up your bum to check you out) and you have prostate cancer by the time you notice something is wrong it could have spread beyond the prostate and you are basically fucked.
Here for the ride.
Wow thanks for sharing. I am pleased to hear you are on the road to recovery.

Bless you Cherie for doing this for a great cause.
I have a personal experience with this at the moment as my grandfather has prostate cancer at the ripe old age of 91. He's going into pre-op tomorrow and his surgery is on the 21st (next Monday) but because of his age the doctors aren't sure if he'll make it out the other side... he's had a good run though! Many others pass on far earlier in their lifetimes so 91 isn't bad going at all.
I'm tempted to shave myself a mohawk to raise awareness for the cause now.
Good for you!
I've always wanted to shave my head too. Maybe I will one day.
