They have been working on the tunnel for a few weeks now, new lights, repairing the damaged tiles etc, oh and have fitted a few new cameras as well from what I hear.

thru the tunnel a few times today, seems to be a camera every 50 metres now, lights are alot better

Yes... There is one radar unit at the Lyttelton end of the tunnel as far as I know but have seen all sorts of test vehicles and equipment hanging around there so who knows.

I know a guy who works in tunnel control. They have always been able to work out your avg speed through tunnel from one end to the other. If you are speeding excessively they will pull you up and give you a ticket. I find it's just easier to stay around the 50-55kmph and then it doesn't matter what they do to catch speeders.
