Anyone been there or have any knowledge-based opinions on it relative to the other halls in Dunedin?

It wasn't one of my three choices but I got offered a place there. Anyone know how the accommodation system works at Otago? I was expecting something saying "Your first/second/third choice was declined, your application has been sent to...". I don't know where it went or if there are other halls that haven't seen it yet.

Not absolutely sure how it works now

But it used to be that the Accomodation Office would place all the applicants into a pool.

Hall Masters would draw applications from the pool, based on what ever criteria they chose. Sometimes this was on applicants preference, but could also be based on course, marks etc

Those they did not accept, or who turned down an offer, went back into the pool

Those left in the pool at the end of season were S.O.L.

If you have been offered a place take it asap. There are far more applicants than places, there is no guarantee that your application will ever be seen by those halls you aimed for, and Salmond is good - right on campus

Just make sure you get yourself in a college. It is the ideal situation to make new friends and flat mates for subsequent years. It wouldn't have been one of the colleges I would have chosen but its better than no college

I work at the Otago uni, and to be honest all of the colleges are pretty much the same. The only real difference is how far they are from the main camus.
Salmond is probably one of the furtherest, but it is still only a 10 to 15 min walk.
The hardest part will be walking past the "Gardies" on a nice sunny day.

Our eldest son was at Knox. They have a few traditions there which are a hangover from Oxbridge like dressing for dinner and so on but our son loved it all which in some ways is surprising for a sport-crazyTokoroa lad. However, as others have rightly said, hall life wherever it is; is a wonderful way to make lifelong friends and take part in long-established rituals. Great for supporting each other through stressful times too. I don't know about other halls but Knox encouraged second years to stay in hall and become "grandparents" to the freshers. The inducement was superior quality rooms but the idea of a buddy system is an excellent one.

I know that economics dictate that a lot of students live in the family home whilst studying but all 3 of our kids lived in hall and then flatted. I think that the independence and maturity they gained whilst doing so was of immense value.

Next to St Margs is Unicol - Party Hall. I went to Carrington. I'm sure they're all much of a muchness. Yeah, as said previously, just getting into a hall of residence is the important thing

I heard some things about General Waiting List today which is probably where they got my application from.

Yeah, Salmond is a bit further away but rather than risk missing out entirely I think I'll just take it. Formal dressing up isn't really my thing anyway.

Where does one store a motorcycle while staying at a hall?
