    Is my diagnosis correct?

    ok, here is my problem, just bought a bike the other day. picked it up, and had a 200km ride home, sweet as I thought. got the bike, and went to get lunch, came out and battery was flat. ok I thought, no worries, he said it had been sitting for a while, it probably just needs a good charge (ride!).
    so on the bike and away I went. stopped after 136km to get fuel. turned the bike off, and it wouldnt start (but does pushstart fine)

    I rang the guy immediately and he said it had a new battery in it, went back to the bike, and hello, it started. ok I thought, will get it home and charge her up properly.

    put battery on charge overnight. put it back into new bike, it starts. go for a ride (about 15minutes) and get back home, turn off bike. turn bike back on and hot the starter, and nothing.
    take battery out and put it in my other bike, yep dead as a doornail.

    So, My thinking here is that the regulator is fucked, and that is the problem, and that it has possibly fucked the battery as a result. I cant put a voltmeter on it (I tried to today but my voltmeter is broken fuckitall) but as it stands at the momment, that is what I think the problem is.

    does my diagnosis sound right? it will run beautifully, pushstart piece of cake, but battery dies that fast it isnt funny.
    I have emailed the guy I bought it off, filling him in on the details so far, but I want to try and get a rough diagnosis before asking him whether he is prepared to come to the party or not.

    fucked batt, batt not getting charge

    Does it try to start at all when it won't start?
    Sidestand switch? Clutch switch?

    when it doesnt start, it sort of tries to start, but doesnt. like it hasnt got enough juice. doesnt quite start to turn over, just a sort of buzzzzzz noise

    Loose/dirty connections?
    Multimeter would really help for diagnosis...very cheap at DSE

    have been over EVERY connection on the whole bike and cleaned them all, that was my first point of call. gonna run down to the battery place and see if theyll throw a tester on the fucker for me

    Is your diagnosis correct? Hard to tell without a proper testing with a multimeter, but it does sound like the R/R. However (but!) if the battery's completey 'ted, and the R/R's not charging, then it wouldn't bump start or run, as you need some zolts for the ignition. Once the igntion and lights have drained the battery to a certain point, the engine will start to misfire then just die.

    It could be a problem with a plug in the charging system; did you check the battery terminals and grounds were clean and tight, and check the wires and plugs from there to the R/R and stator? Do that, charge the battery, borrow a meter, and check the voltage with the bike running. It should be at least 12.5V at rest, and slightly higher at idle, and at 5k rpm should plateau at 14.x volts.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.


    Or maybe not...

    took it down tp the battery place, and they have agreed it is the reg/rec at fault, so now I am after a 7 wire reg/rec to fit a VFR400r nc24.........

    Honda's... had reg problems with my VTR thou, nc30 and a NSR

    pretty sure i went with Kawasaki regs. Make sur your next one has cooling fins..

    If you hadn't said it didn't work in another bike, I'd have said starter motor brushes are worn.

    But since you did I'd lean towards a faulty rectifier/regulator.

    Yes classic reg/rec failure symptoms. Were you to check the charge rate you'd probably find it very high 16 volts or above.

    The solution if its the rec, is to fit up an FH012AA or FH010AA rec from any large capacity bike from 06 to now. They are MOSFET regs and not the overheating current sucking pig Capacitor Shunt types all over bikes have been using since the stone age. They run super cool and givwe off super stable charge figures.

    The 012 is OEM on the Yamaha R1, FJ1300, FZ1, Kawasaki ZX10/14, Honda CBR1000 etc... You can even get the actually plugs needed now too.

    The 010 on the 600 Sport bikes etcs...

    BUT only from 06 and on.

    Bonus is they are under $200 shipped on ebay and also availalbe locally through Dealers.

    The 012 will handle 50amp!
