Speeding or popping a wheelie doesnt AFFECT anyone. Spraying fine gravel all over the road affects LOTS of people. Not the same.

You cant get a man with a broom to sweep up several kilometers of gravel. They just aren't going to do that.

Yep a small piece of bark coming off a truck who is doing the legal 90k's (yeah right) that hits you will hurt, and if it is big enough it could be enough to knock you off your machine...The driver is the person responsible for his load....

Nice 'wank wank' attitude dude... gravel on the road IS a huge hazard - to all bikers. The driver of the truck should be aware of what is happening with the load he is hauling, whether its tonnes of scrap metal, gravel or fairy dust!

I hope you dont have to have the unfortunate luck to come across a patch of randomly spilled gravel on a sweeping bend to sort your blazee attitude out cos then you would be wishing that someone had done something about reporting the careless bugger who dropped it.

And as for if you wanna be a cop, join up - cops rely on members of the public to be proactive about reporting offences... you saying if someone was burgling your neighbours house that you wouldnt ring the cops cos you didnt wanna nark on them... get a grip!

No point ringing *555 or going to the police station to make a report. The best thing to do would be ring the company he drives for and complain. The cops won't do anything, but at least the company might.

Coming back from Wellington after the protest ride, I had a truck pull out into a line of traffic at the Napier/Taupo intersection and run me off the road. I was lucky enough to be able to go onto the pavement and around him. When I went to the cop shop they said they might look into it but there was nothing they could really do. Only if there were enough complaints would they think about laying charges.

I had more luck with the company, who were going to follow it up. As it was a NZ Post truck, they weren't too impressed.

The difference there is they often put up a sign letting road uses know there is grit on the road surface. And there are generally less motorcycles on the roads over winter. I don't want lazy contractors ruining what few nice clean roads we have around Wellington during the best time of the year.

Thinking back on the situation, I don't think the driver could actually see the fine gravel exiting the truck. But there was a build up of the gravel on his tail light shroud, just under the gap in the gate. I really think gravel of this grade should be delivered in drop sacks, or from a truck that has a bed that is design for that particular grade of gravel. I also got the impression the truck was a general use dump truck, and the driver wasn't use to transporting that kind of load.

For the driver it is a maximum $2000 fine if taken to court, or a $600 instant fine which is the usual method of dealing with this, which is an insecure load.

If taken to court the fine is usually round the same figure as the instant fine, although often less.
