Iconic pub in the Taumarunui area?

A mental block. What's the name of the iconic pub in the Taumarunui area, maybe towards Stratford? You know the one I mean?

    Do they have accommodation?

    TIA

Your typical NZ rural backroad. Treated with respect it's great fun. Only a short stretch of gravel these days. No racetrack though.

It's mint. Even the 17km of "gravel" through the Tangarakau Gorge is no real issue.

I can vouch for that being a Naki man. It's a great ride, the 17-18km of gravel is well packed down and the Whanga pub is legendary.Give them a call for acommadation (Geoff will look after you)

Did the gravel section today. Its in bloody good nick!
If you are thinking of just rocking up at the hotel and hoping a bed is available you maybe out of luck. They have been fully booked quite a bit lately. I had lunch there yesterday and got chatting to the owner/publican and mentioned that they has been fully booked for a while now. So I suggest you call 1st and make a booking if you are planning to stay there. If they are fully booked there is accomodation available on the top of the Tahora Saddle.
There is a music festival happening at Tahora on that road right now until the 1st of Jan so there will be more traffic than usual with a few camper vans and house buses around.
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.

    The Forgotten World Highway

Hi, Just checked in on the gos. I see you are planning a trip through the highway and may need accommodation if the pub is full. On top of the Tahora saddle, 10 kms from the pub is very comfortable and friendly. Check it out on http//backcountryaccommodation.kiwiweb.net.nz

How up to date is the info about the cafe on top of the Tahora Saddle? There was a notice in the paper some months ago to say it was closing.

I miss it. That piece of road between Whanga and the Cafe was probably my favourite part of the Forgotten World Highway.
    That and the Devonshire teas...

The Cafe closed down back in March 09. It is now accommodation only with a B&B, tent sites and motor home and caravan sites and is called, " Back Country Accommodation." Still the same people.
