Tardozzi set for BMW switch, targets wins

Davide Tardozzi gets ready for a new challenge with BMW having led Ducati to 16 World Superbike titles

BMW is on the verge of confirming ex-Ducati boss Davide Tardozzi as its new team manager ahead of the 2010 World Superbike season as it forges ahead with plans to challenge for the 2011 title.

Tardozzi made the surprise decision to leave the factory Ducati team at the end of the 2009 season having helmed it to 16 WSBK titles, with initial rumours linking him to a spot in the manufacturer's MotoGP operation.

However, the Italian has all-but-confirmed he will defect to the burgeoning BMW team this season for a new challenge.

Speaking to GPOne.com, Tardozzi points to Aprilia's route of success in 2009, stating that he wants to be taking BMW to podiums and at least one win in 2010 before making a tilt for the title in 2011.

“In 2010 we will try to do what Aprilia did in 2009, which is to say some podiums and perhaps even a victory, so that we are ready to fight for the title the following season, in 2011.”

Tardozzi, who is tipped to have signed a three-year deal, also praised BMW for being accommodating to his contract, revealing he has the chance to leave at the end of 2010 if he so wishes.

“At BMW they have been exceptional; they've even left open the possibility for me to leave at the end of 2010, if I want to – and also to extend my contract if I so wish.”

BMW enters its second season of World Superbike racing with the same line-up of Troy Corser and Ruben Xaus. The team's best finish in its inaugural year of World Superbike racing was Corser's fifth position at Brno.

Tardozzi is expected to make his first appearance in BMW colours at the first World Superbike test of the season at Portimao later this month.
