There are a number of younger members on here that are at the beginning stages of enlistement. My friend Steve is on his Basic Engineering course at the moment which is the first step out of recruit course. He's got a CBR600RR and is loving it so far.

It's better to not pass and know that you could have than to pass and find out that you can't. Wait for the straight.

The bar is not very high for fitness! Any reasonably active person should be able to do it.

Things have probably changed since I left, I would expect to being easier, I never had any problem with fitness tests when I was in the mob and I was never very fit.. If I recall you only had to pass a fitness test by the end of your recruit course to complete it.

Anyway, seeing as the thread has popped up I was RNZAF from 1988-1998 as an avgeek, other than training I did 2 years a Ohakea and 5 years at Woodbourne before I pulled the pin. It's a good life if when you're single but sucks a bit once you have a wife, kids etc. Bloody good training to go and get a job in the real world later.
Riding cheap crappy old bikes badly since 1987

Yeah technically we can't really make people complete a fitness test prior to joining, so they all get to go through initial training, and we are only just now getting to the point where we can kick people out for continual failing of fitness tests! Stupid employment law.

I know for the navy, you have to start at 7.1 on the beep test, 10 push ups and thats it i think. But you do the test 4 times throughout your training. And you have to better your last test each new test.

As for me, i tried for the navy twice and got kicked out of BCT's both times for medical reasons :'(
Fear is never a reason to quit. It's only an excuse.

    .
I served as a marine engineering apprentice at the Devonport Naval Base but it was a civilian job.

I was in the third intake of the compulsory military training in the 1950s, became a territorial army gun fitter.

Later when I became a secondary school teacher I was commissioned as a Cadet officer in the Kaitaia College
cadet unit. I became a range officer and formed a drum and bugle band.

From there I joined the regular Army for three years as a full time bandsman in the NZ Army band stationed at Burnham camp.
I marched up every main street from Whangarei to Invercargil playing my instrument. I was in on the beginning of the
fantastic marching displays now performed by this band around the country and at the Edinburgh Tattoo.

I am mainly remembered for the modified Corgi paratroopers scooter I used to run around the camp on and
take with me in the instrument truck when we went on tour. Named and clearly labeled "BEATSWALKIN"

Your dad was before my time bud.

I was posted to 161 Bty in 1986 and the serving BSM was Matt TePou but he was about to move on then.He is currently coaching the NZ Maori rugby team i believe.I am not surprised that they are doing so well under his tutelage, he is one hard nut.

I got out in 1990 after they gave me a stripe and expected some kind of responsibility in return.(fuck that for a game of soldiers)Young and dumb and all that...but dont regret it.

The Air Force currently require applicants put forward for recruit course to do a Pre-enlistment fitness assessment. It's a 3.6km run which you have about 20mins to do (pretty easy) and 10 pushups. For girls they get an extra 5mins on the run and only have to do 2 pushups. Once your in the requirement is a 5km pack march with 20kg weighted vest completed in under 42mins and also 40 pushsups. They don't have much tolerance for people who don't meet the requirements and by all means it's in your best interest to meet the requirement the first time you do it.

That doesn't sound too harsh, I'm not overweight or anything, just a little unfit.. but i just walked/ran about 10ks in less than 1.25hrs this morning

I just need to get out more and spend less time on the computer on kb!
    Yeah, nah.

TBH with you the fitness test should be the least of your worries. You get ample of time to pass it over the 3 months and with PT 3 times a week you will easily build up your press ups. Plus everyone wants to improve there press ups so everyone does them in the dorm at night. I went from 34 counted (actually did about 45) to 52 counted at the end. And I didn't so much extra training.

The 20kg pack march is a joke. You can walk over half of it and still get 35 minutes. I know for a fact cause I has shin splints and it hurt like fuck!

I's great fun though. Once you get over them yelling at you for little stuff it gets easy. Just don't slack off or you WILL know about it!
