One word. Excellent! Just watch out for the usual back country road hazards, and there could be quite a few unmarked drop offs as well.

it's FMS, the middle section between pongaroa and alfredton is a bit rough in patches so take it a bit easy through there though

the rest of route 52 south to masterton and the rest of route 52 north to waipuk is completely sublime as well....definitely worth doing if you're over that way
