GSX250 clunking noise? Please help

Hi There,

I have just brought an 04' GSX250 Its done 9800km

It has just started to make a horrible clunking noise on de-celeration only (no braking) just engine braking.
It is fine on acceleration and no trouble with changing gears.
It did not do this on the test ride or on the ride home from Rangiora to Blenheim (around 300km). Just started on the weekend on a short ride, so its parked up in the shed till I find out what is wrong.

So would anyone know what the clunking could be coming from??

Yeah, get the chain checked. Do it soonish in case it comes off.

Where is the clunking coming from? Our one bottoms the front forks out very easily, that causes a clunking noise.

My first thought was chain too, check the sprockets while your at it (front one in particular)
Chuck it on the main stand and free wheel the back wheel, chain should have about an inch movement up and down in the centre point between the two sprockets all the time as you turn the wheel, look for tight spots in the chain and check each tooth of the sprockets for damage !
Also check the wheel alighnment aint slipped out radically which might cause the chain to try climbing sideways onto the sprocket if it's a bit loose when you back off !

I have just tried to tighten the chain as it is loose but it is already adjusted right out
So I'm guessing the chain needs shortening now...... what is the best way to do this??

The only way you can shorten a chain is BUY A NEW ONE.

The reason they lengthen is that the pins in the links wear...

Now, 8900k, and a chain stuffed already? Heck, they obviously knew how to adjust it, but didn't know how to clean it!

Replace the sprockets too. You may find your rear one looks like a Circular Saw Blade.... This caused clunks on deceleration too.
Sprockets and chain are always replaced together.

ok, so Looking at the chain on it now it is a DID 520 o-ring
is it better to use an o-ring chain??

Anyhow, I digress:

O-Ring chains are a must on road bikes.
Heavy Duty Chains do not have anything to stop grit getting between the pins and rollers.

O-Rings seal in factory packed grease, and stop water and grit getting in there.

Now, I am truly surprised yours has given up the ghost at such a young age, but I guess that can happen in a poor environment with little care.

Now, the thing to remember is that you still need to put some lubrication on it to stop heat build up between the rollers and the sprockets.
According to the Manual I had for my GSX 600, engine oil is great for this.... 30/40 none the less.... So, I actually use my "Good" Briggs and Stratton Motor Mower oil.

The Little gsx will be getting a new o-ring chain and sprokets AND tyres..... and its not even its birthday!!
it better stop the clunking noise or i will be pissed off!!!!

Just though I'd let you guys know after pulling the chain and sprokets off I took the sprokets in to my local bike shop and they said they did not need replacing , so all I brought was a new x-ring chain and tightened to correct sag........ and no more clunking!!!!!
