    Riveting a chain

Hi all... like the title says i'm about to "rivet" a chain (first ever believe it or not)...

Does anyone have any tips, hints, old wives tales etc... For starters I can't get the link plate to go on to the link... then when I do I have a punch to ?spread/bend? the rivet heads... but was wondering how you brace the chain when tapping...

    Cheers
    I didn't think!!! I experimented!!!

A g-clamp can be used to press the side plate on, make sure its square or it just wont go on, use small washers as spacers to press it past the pins.once its pressed on at the correct width, if you dont have an expensive tool to mushroom the pin heads, hold a heavy solid object like a sledge hammer head behind the link and use a ball pein hammer to carefully flare the pins.

You can buy the rivet tools (suitable for casual use) for about $80 now.

    Don't you mean "bashing" ?

Park the "to be bashed" part over the rear sprocket. Don't slip and clout the sprocket, or you will eff it. Same goes for little pinky finger.

You could also park a larger hammer behind the tool to bash against.
