Labour party in Aus is full of seperate factions. Rudd chose not to do back room deals with them and paid the price. (He didn't come through the ranks like Keating and Hawke etc and was seen as an "outsider").
Gillard has moved up through the ranks, and has the ability to cut deals with the factions. They will support her because of that.MHO
