In summer I do push my bike pretty hard up "the hills", because I can reasonably assume that the road conditions will be dry, and free of gravel. Unfortunately, the roads up the hills around Christchurch never really dry out over winter, and with the grit that is on the roads, I have to ride with extreme caution.

Okay,
may I suggest you read a few books, and put some of the words into practice. You will enjoy motorcycling much more if you are relaxed.
As for the distilled whisky, that may well relax you, but I don't condone consuming before riding.... Well, not without a long sleep in between.
