    Decisions farking decisions

I have been applying for jobs left, right, and centre, for the last few weeks. I have lost track of what I have applied for (reactive response to working with farktards and wanting to get the hell out) and been declined for some and completely ignored for others - no real surprises there.

This morning I had a second interview at a rather large government organisation, they are impressed - of course it doesn't take much. And so they have put a verbal offer on the table.

$26.00 per annum shy of what I am earning currently and I have a feeling they are not going to budge on this start point Now for those that have worked in large organisations or a government department will understand that roles are generally “salary banded” – this jobbie has 10 levels in the band and the offer sits at level 4.

So there is substantial room to move up the salary scale, the role itself is mundane (Administration Support) but busy – the later part I love. There is a huge opportunity to move sideways, up, over within the organisation also.

I have applied for an Operations and HR Coordinator at APN – this is the kind of role I would like to get back into, but unlike above, no real room to progress within this Company as far as I can see. This position closed yesterday so they will be currently culling the masses of CVs.

My current role has been affected substantially by the recession, and things will not pick up for the company for at least another year. This is adding uncertainty to my role and I have been made fully aware that "things" are to be reviewed in December.

So……I need a little help/advice from you lot as things are just whirling around in my head and I can’t seem to pin-down any helpful thoughts or feelings as to "where to next from here".

One less feed of KFC and you get your ride back, and you'll be healthier

Ups and downs with choosing a job, go with a bigger organisation where you've at least got a few years of upward pay movement and some options to move around if you get bored, but you might end up feeling like just another pointless cog in a big machine. More specialised and interesting means you might like going to work more and feel like you're making more of a contribution, but nowhere to go might mean you're looking around again after a while and you're back where you started. Options are a good thing, if you can get a job where you have some without changing employers can be useful.

That is a great post - thank you. And certainly what I was initially thinking before all the bad mannered little voices in my head started ranting.

Now its a government org, it works on bands and then percentile. Generally, low end being 85% often being the offered number. There is no harm is asking for either more money or more leave (you can push to five weeks at times) ...

With the job I am in now they offered 10K less than I wanted and I haggled with both leave and pay and accepted pay being more beneficial to me. I now have the leave as well.

If they want you enough to make a verbal offer they will often be aware of the situation to know when they are pushing the bargain of getting you at a cheap price. Asking for me only risks them saying no .. it doesn't mean that if you still want the job that you can't take it. You can also haggle a three month review with a figure attached.
