    Trawler sinks

Rescuers are being sent to the Southern Ocean where a trawler with 51 foreign crew on board has sunk.

The 82m trawler raised the alarm at 4.40 am, sending out a mayday call from about 400 nautical miles east of Dunedin.

A nearby fishing vessel reported the Oyang 70 - a New Zealand-chartered foreign fishing vessel - had sunk.

Seven fishing vessels are on the scene, searching for the missing vessel and crew members.

So far 44 of the crew have been plucked from the sea.

Weather in the area is good, but foggy and extremely cold.....

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope they find the remainder of crew as a sailor myself there are two things we dread at sea, fire and water inside the ship...been there not a nice feeling

    Not surprising.
The condition of some of those ships is terrible. Russian boats' would be at the top of the list.

Not the most attractive vessel and who knows about its sea worthiness?
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

    Thats terrifying, glad most survived.
I spent 3 months fishing near Heard Island, 3 months of getting the snot knocked out of me. Never again, it's one messed up industry even on the best boats.

So I suppose they want to bring the bastards here .. more bloody foreigners expecting good ol' Godzone to help them out ...

Let them sink or swim ... probably disguised whalers ...

Interesting to see that this little ship has sunk....a friend's husband is in the area assisitng with plucking them out of the ocean....ship was a right wee wreck, apparently leaked a qunatity of oil into the Nelson harbour not so long ago and the owner's are being taken to court over this. Wonder how much the ship was worth for insurance? Will be interesting to see just how this ship sank...and rather quickly.
