The most likely buyers are Contact (we already own the site and hold the resource consents), Genisis to relocate to Huntly where they already have resource consents and can change them to gas fired, or Mighty River to relocate them to Southdown where they already have resource consents and can change them to gas fired.

Or maybe Valley Power in Victoria, where most of the original Whirinaki and Stratford P&W FT4's ended up. I don't think Genesis will be keen to run the P&W units after the hassles they had at Te Awamutu.

Wrong again. They split the generators into 4 companies and sold one of them. They kept the other 3 as State owned assets. They also kept the transmission network as an SOE. Labour then compounded the problem by making the local body electricity boards split their assets into retail, lines and generation, and they were allowed to keep one of these and had to sell the other two.
