Wanted - tubing suitable to make up pannier racks

I'm off on a 1 month trip around ozzie and want to make up some pannier racks to support my soft oxford panniers, a tool tube and a spare petrol tank.

So I'm after 10 or 12mm mild steel tubing.

Anyone want some junk removed from their hoard?

I dunno about mild steel tubing but if you ever need to buy 4130N spec chromemoly tubing try Avparts (NZ) Ltd in Cambridge. They carry stock for aviation industry. It's all imperial sizing not that that is a problem. Cheers.

Have you been and seen your local sheetmetal shop?. If they haven't got it they can usually get it in for ya, mine does for me. The only prob is you have to get a length (8m)if they usually stock it.And cash talks.......

Not yet, I was hoping that someone would have a stash somewhere, failing that I'll go and buy some.

If any of you are anywhere near Hastings, I run a workshop that is one of the biggest users of mild steel tubing in the country, so can help you out.

As for out of towners... let me know what town you live in, and i will try and tell you a supplier close by.

I wouldnt recommend buying the stuff cut to length from engineering shops. That will cost you a fortune.

In my experiance, 16x2 round tube is best for pack racks, but if you dont have propper bending gear, go for 19x1.4 and bend gently using heat.

Get hold of ITM (industrial tube manufacturers) in Hamilton and ask for a nearby supplier. They cut some good deals in tube

Happenstance is a wierd thing. A couple of days ago I noticed a medium sized broken deck umbrella that had suddenly appeared in the road side ditch out side my place. It was still there this morning and around lunch time my brain finally started working - I'm after tubing to make a pannier rack - umbrella - tubing - umbrella!

So when I got home tonight I went and retrieved it and its made out of light guage steel eliptical tubing. Solved! So project this weekend is the rack.
