    Vodafone Egyptian call centre

GM of corporate affairs Tom Chignell says they are bridging the gap with call centre staff in New Zealand.

He is apologising for any delays customers experience and says the company is working to get things back to normal.

Vodafone has four call centres, three of which are in New Zealand.

It has outsourced some of its help calls to a call centre run by Vodafone Egypt since 2007.
Now maybe companies like Vodafone NZ will learn to employ Kiwis.

Why, because we're apathetic and unlikely to revolt?

Three of the four are in NZ.

Which is unusual considering what some people will work for.

Having a call centre in Egypt could be a bad plan if Mubarak is overthrown.

As long as we have unemployment here and taxpayers are having to pay the dole, why give this work to a bunch of gyppos? It could be done by Kiwis.

They already have fighters and gunships patrolling around the airport, land and cellphones are failing. I just got the last of our crews out of Cairo yesterday. Its not good at all.

Mubarak is the arabic word for blessed, guess he's starting to run out of those.

It could be done by Kiwis - who have to be paid at least minimum wage (isn't that like $12.50/hour now).

Or it could be done by Egyptians (does anyone else keep getting the "walk like an Egyptian" song in their head) for less.

witty, and true. The peasants are revolting: Yes, but one needs serfs to toil in one's fields.

I've been watching the riots SPECIFICALLY so that i could see if they did, in fact, walk like Egyptians.

Turns out, not so much. Lot of running about and tear gas and smacking people with batons though. :

By your own source out of 4 centres 3 of them are in NZ. Seems they do employ Kiwi's. What's your point?

Yes they do employ some kiwis, but it looks like could certainly employ more rather than have the rest of us employ them to do nothing. Get the point now?

Maybe their business model doesn't support the level of staff (ie costs) 4 centres would require here, but they could support another offshore, therefore providing more jobs and (arguably) better service?

Or just pampering to the shareholders bottom line at the expense of some kiwi jobs.
