Motorcycle helmets 'cut risk of spine injuries after collisions'

Research from the highly respected Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has suggested that wearing crash helmets – already known to reduce brain injuries – may also reduce the risk of cervical spine injury.

The University’s study – covering 40,000 motorcycle collisions between 2002 and 2006 – showed that helmeted riders were 22 percent less likely to suffer cervical spine injury than those without helmets.

The study is published online in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.

Did they elaborate as to what other crash protection the helmeted riders wore at the time of their crash?

Excellent question! In a country where helmets are optional, those that choose to wear helmets may also choose to wear other protective gear. 40,000 is a pretty good sample size though
