The old bobbies helmets they used to have at least provided a place to put their lunch while on the beat. My Dad used to walk the beat in Wellington and in England back in the 1960s. No car, no radio, no backup except for an appointed time to be at a public telephone booth.... and just a short wooden baton for a weapon.
Hats in general add height and help with an impression of authority. At least this USED to work when they only hired men of 6ft plus. Now days some of the kids recruited look like they will blow over.
The peaked cap provides some sun deflection from the eyes and also protection from some of the elements.
So yes they do have practical uses. The OP just cant see past his own self driven bitterness to see that.
Obey the law and you never have a problem with our police. In the main, they are excellent people doing a job few of you would cope with. But like ANY job, you always get the odd idiot. Just like this website.
