The old bobbies helmets they used to have at least provided a place to put their lunch while on the beat. My Dad used to walk the beat in Wellington and in England back in the 1960s. No car, no radio, no backup except for an appointed time to be at a public telephone booth.... and just a short wooden baton for a weapon.

Hats in general add height and help with an impression of authority. At least this USED to work when they only hired men of 6ft plus. Now days some of the kids recruited look like they will blow over.

The peaked cap provides some sun deflection from the eyes and also protection from some of the elements.

So yes they do have practical uses. The OP just cant see past his own self driven bitterness to see that.

Obey the law and you never have a problem with our police. In the main, they are excellent people doing a job few of you would cope with. But like ANY job, you always get the odd idiot. Just like this website.

For a start... three of them have forgotten to put a magazine into their rifle. The one with the magazine fitted probably hasn't been allowed any rounds. Safety at work!
Another will get a surprise when he lowes his goggles and the world goes black...

Headdress forms part of a particular uniform and varys on the function of the task, i.e Service Dress or Combat Dress. With respect specifically to headdress I'll put it in simple terms - Helmet for riding bike/ horse, baseball cap for SAR, Dog or Boat work, balaclava for cold climate, ballistic helmet for STG/ AOS etc....

This is no different than the Defence Force, Beret, Jungle hat, Base ball cap, Kevlar helmet etc....

The Forage cap and or Akubra provide no personal protection other than from the sun and deflecting light objects. That aside they form part of a uniform dress standard.

So if a cop were to say to you - "Oi, cunt, over here!", you wouldn't be offended...?

Honestly no, I think I'd find it more amusing if anything, but at the same time cunt is a bit different than P.I.G. (Police Inforcement Guy).

Perhaps. Childishly Unnecessary Niggling Troll isn't too insulting - especially as you're the biggest C.U.N.T. of all...?

The UK version is contained here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Peel

In short Sir Robert breed Sandy Back Pigs. Like most things the term was imported into NZ. There is also a US version.

not to bad Virago I like it. But no I'm not the biggest C.U.N.T. of 'em all infact as far as I'm aware I don't fit the Troll definition but then I've never really understood exactly what that meant anyways? thought it had something to do with flaming?

So you've just contradicted yourself. Most of us have encountered one of the "idiots" and as a result, had a problem with our police whilst obeying the law.

I heard a cop recruitment ad on the radio - looking for 1000 new recruits (or something like that) and they want most of them to be young, even of school leaving age.
