There are broken water and sewers aplenty, and what I could see of the CBD is beyond fucked.
Yeah, I dropped my partner off at the civil defense HQ this morning for her shift and ended up chatting to a mate who works for TVNZ. He told me that the media have been asked to downplay the extent of the damage and even the number of potential fatalities. Apparently the area inside the one way network is at least 80% totalled.

And it looks like my bike is fine and has been pushed into an alleyway out of the way of emergency vehicles, so all is good.
Don't blame me, I voted Green.

I've heard that elsewhere too, but didn't know really to believe it or not. Sounds like it might be closer to fact than we all realise.

Heard from my sister today, she had been up to my uncles place on the hill. Initial reports were that it was fucked, but it appears to be salvageable. However my uncle isn't is such good shape, he was at the corner of St Asaph and Colombo (I believe) when it happened, and straight after he heard screams from around the corner. He went around to find one of the flattened buses, and helped rescue a woman with a broken leg. Unfortunately to get to her he had to remove dead bodies first. He's a hard man my uncle, ex MAF officer, patrolled our borders and got into all sorts of mischief here and in places like Singapore, has survived two helicopter crashes hunting down south, but my sister said he was like a different man.

My 17 year old daughter watched 2 dead bodies being pulled from wreckage and her best friend's mum is missing. She's pretty stressed but we're working through it.

There will be so many people with horrific first hand accounts. I consider myself lucky that I didn't have to see any of it. My brother was within the cordon on the first night helping with the rescue, he ordered one of his team to remove some sheets of iron, only to discover 3 bodies underneath. Like your daughter, my uncle, and 99% of the other people involved, they are not prepared for what they have seen, they are not trained in how to deal with it.

    Campbell "Live"?

Did anyone see Campbell Live tonight (supposedly) interviewing Ken Ring (the moon man) about his theories on earthquake prediction?

Now I don't have a view either way but that was the most ignorant biased performance by a TV interviewer I have ever seen!

That Campbell really is a jumped up annoying little prick!

He was just looking for some sensation and notoriety for himself, that sort of behaviour certainly isn't need especially considering the current situation in Christchurch!

    Bloody idiot! (IMHO)

I don't know how that Ken Ring guy predicts earthquakes but my theory is to watch out for pods of whales beaching themselves. I don't know if that's been suggested before but it seems to have fit a number of times

I normally really like John Campbell, but he did a bloody awful job of that interview. Personally I put people like Ken Ring in the same basket as tarot card readers and astrologers, but there were better ways to handle the interview.

God save me from amateurs with theories! Funny how it's weathermen and retired teachers who have these theories and not geologists. And don't get me started on the 'The Triangle of Life' bullshit (allegedly - how to survive an earthquake)

I have a plastic statue of Jesus perched on the ledge above a door and whenever it falls over there's been an earthquake. 100% accurate is my plastic Jesus!

Shit - I though it was Paul Holmes back again - that was his technique - badger and talk over the person he was interviewing if he did not like the response he was getting.

    A very poor job indeed.

A lot of people in town are talking about the moon-man and somehow I think John C just gave him more followers. One positive think I got from the MM was he believes after April the rumbles will return to 'normal' ..... after another big one ( f a r k ). Bloody Moon Man.

I predict that CHCH will be a ghost town the weekend of March 20th!
