The media often doesnt Dig up issues - unless theres a market for it.
But did you see that Metro article linked before? Theres some nice investigative journalism.
The media certainly is biased. Sometimes to the point of being blind and misled (especially political opinions, ie Dominion vs NZ Herald?).
