    Yamaha FZR400 3tj-1 1991. Digital ignitor issues?

    Heres a quick post on my bike for tonight more details to come tomorow as im tired right now lol, i threw my bike on trademe tonight and posted on KB that its for sale in a rage of pure frustration and male PMS due to too much cageing to work and not riding so heres a link to the trademe listing that has a quick rant in light detail about whats been going on now some of the KB boys wont stand for this and are telling me get it fixed and to post a thread here so before i go to bed i thought id get the ball rolling with this quick post.

    Progress

    Ok yesterday I went to Dick Smith and got myself a multimeter and box of connecters, then back to work and printed off pages 158 - 203 of the full service manual which covers electrical and printed myself off a nice full color wiring diagram.

    So sat down at my bike and had at it! Redid some connecters and tidy'd up all the poo wiring that was evident.

    Then continued to check with multimeter as per manual specifications battery, fuses, switches engine stop, neutral, sidestand, diode relay (got odd readings from this could be my newbieness but noted), continuity between plugs, spark plugs, spark caps, spark leads, coil packs, pickup coil (odd readings from this also Noted), after all this still no spark "Replace Digital Ignitor Unit" (Manuals words) so today im off to Jaycar to buy some transistors the same spec or high than the ones in the OEM Ignitor see how i go.

    Any way carried on last night skiped starting system because all turns over fine and strong but saw clutch switch in this section so checked that.

    Then onto the charging system, fuse, battery, charging voltage (bikes not running.... (thanks for the reminder manual)), stator coil resistance seems fine, wiring ok "Replace Rectifier Regulator".

    2am off to bed lol.

    Verdict all seems in reasonably good shape few odd readings but i think thats due to manual saying set multimeter to Ohm x 1k and my mutlimeter having 20 200 20k 200k 20m settings and my goin wtf and flicking threw them till i get a apropriate reading (got the hang of it in the end 20 = ohm x 1, 200 = ohm x 10, etc etc.

    So what I'm goin to do is beef up this Ignitor with some stronger transistors and replace a suspect rectifier / regulator and hopefully she will fire up and run sweet if not ill look into replacing the components with "odd readings"

    is there no spark on all plugs, or just 2 plugs

    All four, my beliefs are that the rect/reg is spiking power to the TCI (transistor controlled ignition unit) and blowing the Transistors, which i am piking up a new couple today ones that can handle a lil more ampage and solder em in and see how that goes, ill also be getting a new rect/reg for it if this works.

    Cheers Paul, Ive always been into my two wheeled machines first bike was a ts185er was an old farm hack that was piss easy to work on single this single that just pull it all apart and clean it and slap it all back together and shes brand new.....

    This bike is.... wow, not that way at all

    Good tho really enjoying it and learning TONS!

    Make sure you ground the rect / reg properly back to the engine. If there is resistence between it and the engine / battery bad things can happen. How did that link work out?

    Rect/reg is bolted straight to the frame for ground you think might pay to run another ground straight to battery? I'm taking someone elses advice and putting in some extra grounds from battery to engine aswell. Droped the Rect/Reg off at the yamaha place in pukekohe today they sell a bike there (AG250? i think he said) with the same Rect/Reg so on monday the mechanic (who the salesman spoke very highly of) is going to put it into one of there bikes and do a charge test over the battery for me, They can also suply me an after market Rect/Reg for $150 which isnt too bad can get cheaper over seas but also save me the hassle and is a more reliable source with a warranty which i thinks worth the extra $$$, went to Jaycar and they didnt have any of the Darlington Transistors that i need for the Ignitor but gave me a web site of a NZ company that have them for sure so will order those ASAP! =D all looking positive so far!

    First im not realy up with the wiring on these but as far as my understanding of the reg/rect goes it doesnt do anything untill the bikes running and then it regulates the charge going to the battery and bike electrics so if your worried about it being buggered why not just unplug it.
    I have a gsxr400 running total loss and it hasnt got the reg/rect on it cos it doesnt have a charging system anymore.
    winding up stucky since ages ago

    Yeah thats cool but my Digital Ignitor is nakerd so the bike wont start untill ive fixed that. Im looking at the rect.reg as the cause of my bike blowing cdi units.

    I see were you are coming from and agree.
    I was just making the point that you can unplug it while you get it going if needed

    Yup - I think we discussed that in th other thread. Its bolted to the subframe which is bolted to the alloy chassis which is bolted (all via 20+ year old bolts)

    The extra earths made a big difference

    Yeah thats a good point, i did have a read threw your old thread but damn thats a big thread lol.

    I will do that ill run about three more grounds battery to engine then battery to frame then rect/reg to one of those points.
