Hi,

Just got my first bike tonight, and was super amped to get riding, I rode it back home in the Auckland weather.. I got wet, but far, was having the time of my life! (Yes I do have a license)

I am new to the bike scene, but know a little bit about cars.. Any tips regarding anything to do with motorcycles I'll be listening!

Also if anyone has a service manual for the '91 ZXR250 I'll be keen to grab a copy!

Welcome aboard Harris,, there is good advice and bullshit abundant here, sift it and enjoy.... this is KB ... you have been warned
you say you have a licence but its your first bike? So apart from basic handling you have no riding time? Or is that a 'plead the 5th' question?
The ZXR is a pretty quick little sucker, and would be considered a high performance 250.. if there is a local learner riders group organised there, I'd strongly recommend attending them. There is a social 250 ride group here that has run with experienced riders assisting and often giving knowledge. What you have is not what I would call a 'forgiving' bike... it has power and can get along quite quickly off the mark... so an error on the throttle could be punished, whereas a slow bike like a GN would not be so reactive.... Take your time, enjoy, and if I can offer one bit of advice? What you know from driving a car is only minimaly applicable on the bike..... you need 360 degree vision, a crystal ball, neon signs above your head, and another set of eyes firmly fixed on the tarmac to see, potholes, petrol/oil/diesel spills, wet manhole covers... and the list goes on........

If you count some dirtbike riding out on a farm riding time then yes that'll be all of my riding 'experience' !! Since posting, I've had about an hour in the cockpit just doing normal errands.. riding round (not driving ) so i hope to build up some sort of experience through just going through the motions!

Oh yes I agree, I've signed up to some of the 'groups' like BRONZ.. But I am hoping to do the SASS thing too! Just not sure where/who to contact for that, and if it is still running..

Potholes.. Learnt the hard way by going over one (at the appropriate speed of course) knocking the twins downstairs.. So lesson to stand up on the pegs a little, letting my knees do some of the absorbing! But I know there is still PLENTY to learn! Ahhh~

Oh and add to the list in the wet...tar snakes and areas of little mettle over the base of tar... can and will become the next best thing to a wet, metal manhole cover for grip
