    Pre-pay pumps

Do they piss you off? One local sv stn in Te Awamutu seems to be on pre pay throughout the day. All were on PPay after 7pm, except, where the attendant knows me, he will usually unlock the pump and leave me to fill however much I need.

On a bike, when I dont always know how much it will take to fill up ( and most riders top up when filling) it niggles me.

I can understand where the sv stn owner is coming from, but I object to being assumed to be a criminal, when I aint.

I cant think of any other service industies that require you to pre pay.

I go to the same gas station, car or motorbike, I don't even take my helmet off when I fill up - they know me by sight. I hate the fact that some gas stations expect you to know how much gas you want to put it the bike! I find it impossible to guess, and I have to trickle it anyway....

Never had a problem with them, they always switch them over for some reason, I must look honest.

It's more of a pain in the car as the pre pay only goes up to $99. Blardy annoying.

My local Mobil station has been a pre-pay for ages. I've been going there maybe 5 years. Usually a nod of the head was enough as they recognised me. Sometimes I left my credit card with them.

About 3 months ago they said they weren't allowed to do that any more. I had to pre-pay a specific amount of money. The guy knew me well, as he had seen me come in many many times. I told him I wasn't prepared to buy my petrol that way. He said his hands were tied.

I take the view that they don't have to sell me anything they don't want to, and I don't have to buy anything I don't want to. A sale only happens when both parties agree on the terms.

So now I buy my petrol at the BP near by. Problem solved.

Most of the places around the tron are "pumps must be authorised" these days instead of prepay. Back in the day of prepay I used to tell them that I didn't know how much I wanted and they'd get me to leave my AA or flybuys card or whatever at the counter while I filled. I guess it's not hard to have someone else's card but that always seemed to be OK.

I had someone tell me the other day that they had $200 available on their card. The went to New World petrol or Pak 'n' Save petrol and put $60 in their car. They then went shopping and tried to buy something else for $100 but the card was declined. Apparently, when you swipe at the pump, they electronicly earmark $150 (cos that's the max fill) for 24 hours. I thought it was a bit stupid at first but I guess if that's the way it has to work...

Hate prepay, as most have said you have no idea really how much you're gonna need in your bike.

The shell/z/whatever the fuck they wanna call themselbes now around the corner is good, not on prepay and they always unlock it.

I have been known to be a bastard about pre-pay before now.

One night at BP Papakura, I refused to leave my eftpos card with the woman in order to fill the wagon. She would only allow me to fill right up (amount unknown) if I left my card with her.

I said "No! You'll probably skim my card details while I'm out there!" She said "Of course I won't." To which I replied "Well I won't steal your fucking gas either! You trust me and I trust you. You don't trust me, I don't trust you. OK?"

She wouldn't do it. So I told her to stick her fucking gas up her fat arse and went along the road a bit to the next servo. Cow...

I always fill the bike at pay-at-the-pump servos these days. No attendant to play silly games.

The wagon gets filled at one of two stations each time. They are quite happy to allow a fill without me leaving my card with them.

I also take exception to being assumed to be a thief. Assume everyone is a thief and they won't disappoint you...

I hate pre-pay, and in car or on bike, if I pull up to a servo and find the pump is on pre-pay - and I have an option - I just drive or ride off again.

    However...

Not sure how this works. Petrol isn't a service, it's a good.

Say you are at a supermarket, if you get to the check-out and find you can't pay - you can just leave the stuff. It's also quite hard to just "run away" with a trolley load of goods.

Service station issues are quite different, it's "hard" to get the petrol back out of a vehicle, and much easier for people to run away with the goods.

(Different at a restaurant (for example), where once people have eaten you don't have much control - though I believe I read dine-and-dash has increased in N.Z. and some places might go pre-pay.)

    Anyway - phooey; I hate pre-pay.

I wouldn't mind pre-paying, but you just donno how much you need. It just means you have to go back in to get more. What happens if you over estimate, are they dicks about giving your cash back?

I guess you could go in and ask for $20 worth. Then go back in and say "I need some more - it ain't full. Let's try another $10!"

Then go back again and say "It's nearly full but not quite. Can I have another $2.00?"

And repeat ad nauseam until you are filled to the very brim.

    Wonder what would happen?

Ask RM about his prepay pump adventure

    Like that, but more annoying!
