Let's put the same idea in a different scenario: TPTB have decided to tax you more, whenever they feel like it, however much they feel like, and they've taken away your vote and your representation.
I don't see any 'easy money' in the equation, we've still got to pay it off at some point.

    Its a sad thing really.
A few cocksuckers make the news for negative things, and suddenly all students are whiny, drunken little arseholes, so 'fuck the lot of them'

Never mind the vast majority of students who work their arses off, many of whom work full time, just so they can afford to attend, or the thousands that live in slum conditions worse than poverty stricken areas of new zealand because property owners refuse to renovate or insulate the houses, all the while trying to figure out how they are going to pay for their course next year, when, despite the fact that the course hasnt changed, or in many cases, actually offers the student less in the way of support than last year, will actually cost several hundred more next year.
Pr the students who by the end of the year are literally living on 2 minute noodles and weetbix because they cant afford proper food.

Yep. fuck the students, because its not like the pittance they get as an allowance (which hasnt increased in how many years?, despite the fact that petrol, food and everything else necessary for life has increased steadily in cost) isnt enough for them to live on, right???

Yeah. fuck them. They dont need a voice anyway right?

Getting rid of compulsory student union membership is the point I was making. I have to pay union fees for a services I don't want.

Every other union has to earn it's members, it's not some birthright.

No arguement about fee costs, they are too high.

I got nothing against students, I'm a part time one myself. I just get sick of a few like the ones in the article that think they're owed that union money.

The bit I don't get is that this is Auckland University students protesting against the removal of compulsory union membership...but the Auckland union is already voluntary, because the students voted to make it so..

    lolwut? That's messed up.

The student associations are kind of like welfare aren't they (as well as organising piss ups, but they largely pay for themselves anyway iirc), help out those who aren't coping with exam stress so well, or student advice etc. Guess they'll be the first things to go if it is an opt in system, as the majority don't need that stuff.

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/educ...e-services-Key

"Waikato voted for voluntary membership, saw the collapse of the services of the student associations and voted universal membership back in."

I.e. everyone else left that didn't need/want it.

So reading this, I take it the current law/policy means that the union can change it's rules to make other non-union members be forced to join.

It's like saying if you want a car you have to join the AA
