    What WAS he thinking?

From The local rag this morning...feel sorry for the dude but hell, what was he thinking?

    "TEEN SETS SELF ON FIRE

A teenager was hospitalised with severe burns after accidentally setting himself on fire while trying to siphon petrol from his car. The 19-year-old was siphoning petrol from his own car around 9.40pm on Thursday night in the South Auckland suburb of Manurewa. He couldn't see what he was doing so used an open flame for light."

Yeah - exactly. I even saw a comic strip (Mickey Mouse and Goofy) based on exactly that scenario...hard to believe.

Went to a roll-over crash one night a couple of years back where the guy was inside the up-side down car trying to find his groceries that were scattered inside the car.

Petrol was steadily dripping from the petrol tank onto the inside of the car.

Drunken idiot-boy was trying to light up his cigarette lighter to find the aforementioned groceries.

Got upset when my mate and I dragged him feet-first out of the car and frog-marched him up the bank onto the road...he was VERY rude.

My wifes sons tried siphoning petrol out of the car with a domestic vacuum cleaner. How it never went boom is a miracle. Melted the cotton liner onto the inside of the vacuum and stunk the house out with fumes when Jo went to clean the house next!

My Bro-in-law successfully blew up his vacuum cleaner siphoning stones out of his Bobcat fuel tank. Took the vacuum cleaner back to the shop and said it just blew up so they replaced it... He was a bad boy way back then...

    Some people do dumb shit.....

I was 1/2 way across the Pacific, lights were dimmed and most people were sleeping. Then this numbskull wanted to look for something in the over head locker and was using his lighter with a 4 inch flame for illumination. All we needed was a leaky bottle of parfume or scotch....

Back when we lived in Twizel we had visiting rowers staying in the house across the road from us. Late one afternoon we heard some terrible screams and saw people running around all over the place. A few minutes later the ambulance turned up. I found out a day or two later that the young fellas had found some meths and were pouring a little on their arms and setting it on fire. Very cool. Not so cool though for the young fella who didn't realise that some of the meths had spilt onto the crotch of his pants. He found out real fast though when he lit up and his groin exploded in blue flame before his eyes. Unfortunately it affected more than him as he was in a four which, as a result of his barbequed bollocks, became a three and couldn't race.

Go on ... someone make the obvious joke about it being a coxless four....

Let's not forget the famous LPG sniffers....

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/ar...ectid=10408556

"Police are struggling to get the full facts from a group of teenagers who were inhaling LPG prior to an explosion which left one youth dead.

They said the explosion, leaving the remaining four teenagers in hospital with burns, was apparently caused by one of them trying to light a cigarette in the aftermath of sniffing the flammable gas."

One would imagine they would struggle to get facts from them ... PRIOR to the explosion as well ...

Then there was the strange case of Big Dave....Another big Dave....who in an inebriated state decided he knew a good party trick.

He climbed the large African mahogany behind the house, up to to the kids play house (very high) and flying fox.... and in the dark he stripped butt nekid. Then stuffed a decent few tufts of toilet paper, lit the trailing ends of the toilet paper and set off down the flying fox which ran past the party on the veranda.

The flying fox moved along SLOW

The fanned toilet paper burnt FAST

    Heat RISES

The ground was a long way down and over scrub and rubbish where you do not want to land...in the middle of the night ...with delicate dangly bits exposed

The Doctors and staff at the Alyangula medical centre still get tears of laughter recalling Dave"s explanation as to how he sustained 3rd degree burns to his buttocks

What people often don't appreciate is it is the vapour combusting, not the liquid. The vapour spreads far and wide and quickly, beautifully shown here

Look at the circle of flame. Also petrol vapour is heavier than air so be really careful to ventilate engine bays if you're working in one. loads of people die each year becoming overcome by fumes in them
