its interesting how a driver can fail the first screening test,
    then the second roadside test,
then go blow the evidential test and fail,
    ask for blood and fail,
then be let off because of some insignificant little detail that had nothing do do with the fact they were caught and failed every test known to common sense.

Totally agree...but the below posts sum it up....what IS the answer?

Yup, scumdog and the boys do the hard work, and some slimey lawyer and softcock Judge get them back out on the streets in a couple of days to re-offend...again!

We could crush his car, but chances are its not his, or it is being paid off, and the Mom and Pop investors in the finance company become the real losers, as the profit they hoped for from their investment gets gobbled up by the finance companies lawyers attempting to protect their security.

And if he is a young person, he is just as likely to flee, as he knows he is a faultless driver at speed and can easily and safely just drive away. I on the other hand am just as likely to be driving home from picking the grandkids up from school and I will carelessly get in his way.

We can put an alcohol interlock in his car. He will just get a party car without one, or will get his mate to blow in the interlock.

Or, we could actually, eventually lock repeat offenders up.

But its New Zealand. The politicians will simply add more laws with the same penalties that already don't work. We will get compulsory third party insurance, carry proof of ownership, punitive fines for not being licenced or registered, and will wring our hands when nothing changes.
Fantastic and well thought out post

    My 2 cents worth:
I say immediate detainment after the breath test fail...and community service...with a twist!
Everytime there is a fatal accident and the "mess" needs to be cleaned up.....give the Fireservice boys a well deserved break and the cops something to smile about....get these drink driving fucks out of bed @ 0300 in the morning, deactivate the MANDITORY tracking ankle bracelet (that bans them from ANY outlet that sells piss! and detects trace's of alcohole), and then give them a bucket of hot water & rags to clean up the "mess"
.....that way they are subjected to the REAL cost of drink driving! and hopefully the repeat exposure to blood & guts just screws them up for life!

....so sick of seeing repeat drink drivers behind the wheel

Ummm how did he get behind the wheel? Was it the same car?
Aren't they suppose to take you to detox?

Sounds more to me like the Police system of procedures failed here.
There is already a process police can take to get a driver off the road.......they failed to do so here. Grimes needs to wake up that policing is not a "spray and walk away" job.

reckon the cops need two booze buses, one for the testing and one for storing the drunks. The one for the drunks should have clear sides or just a cage so they can be seen a shamed and it be left over night parked in the street.

You only need to get sober enough to walk and not vomit on yourself before getting let out.

Actually they can lock you up for simply being unbalanced and owning a firearm.......not even holding it.

These days there is absolutely no excuse for drink-driving and any person caught should automatically lose their licence for 28 days on first offense. Repeat offenders automatically 28 days in jail and 12mths loss of licence; racidivist offenders increasing jail time until they get the message along with permanent loss of licence.

Same for driving under the influence of illicit drugs.

Yeah, I know, I'm dreaming, right..?
