Troubleshooting Suzuki FXR150

I went on a ride from Auckland to Cape Reinga last weekend and on the way up, the engine started cutting out. After a few seconds it was fine again. On the way back down I lost engine power completely. My speedo and indicators were all working but it showed 0rpm, it has an lcd screen. I thought I might have run out of petrol so flicked it to reserve, pulled the clutch, hit the starter button and away I went. Then I noticed my fuel guage was near the top so I put it back to On instead of Reserve and all was well the rest of the trip home.

On Wednesday I went to NASS and we planned to do Woodcocks Road. I had to ride on the motorway to get to the meeting place. A short time into the trip my bike started cutting out again, backfired and cut out. I pulled over, tried to start it and it wouldn't go. The rider behind me was following from quite far back and said he felt the blast of the backfire. 10 seconds later I tried again and it went. Gave it a bit of a rev and it went through the revs smoothly and idled nicely. Another rider offered to ride back to Albany with me which involved more motorway. My bike fully cut out 3 times on the way.

It seems I can ride perfectly fine in 50 zones but above 80 and it would cut out. I haven't been back out again since Wednesday.

If anyone can help me out that would be awesome.

Fuel line partial blockage? I had a rusty inside of the fuel tank on my FXR when I got it.

When I got the bike I sealed the tank and put new fuel lines on. I didn't replace the secondary filter however which is in-line.

I was thinking that was a possibility but would it still backfire if it was being starved of fuel?

Yup, sounds like a blocked filter. Just check the flow out of the fuel line into a jar. Should be a strong flow.

My bike when I got it had incorrectly set float levels so at 80ks it would do just that. But yours was fine before so it sounds like the line.

I treated the tank with POR15.

Just took the tank off. I'll be replacing the secondary filter. Turned the fuel tap on while nothing was connected to it and it flowed freely. Followed the spark plug wire and found a plug was slightly loose, clamped it on properly so it doesn't wiggle now.

Mine was blocking in the metal line into the float chamber from the fuel hose, not in the hose itself. Blowing fuel through there under pressure sorted it out.

put a zip tie on the cdi so that the plug is pulled in securely to the cdi.
CDI is under the RH sidecover towards the rear

I changed the fuel lines, fuel filter, clamped a plug leading to the spark plug properly and changed my spark plug while I was at it. Took it for a ride and it didn't cut out while pinning the throttle. Guessing all is well now.

I also changed my air filter back to a stock styled one. Seems to run better at low speeds now.

I will also have a look at that cdi plug.

The CDI plug was very loose on Tylers FXR

The above is all good advice.
One thing that concerns me is your statement -I treated the tank.-Is it possible that some of the plastic goop has travelled?
Given how simple the FXR is to remove the carb I would also do that -removing jets and cleaning em out is a fast process.
I'd also be checking for a partially blocked tank vent/vent hose-again because of the sealing process
An unlikely cause but worth a look is to follow the wiring back from the fairing /steering head around to the left side of the frame. There could be wires rubbed bare and a small short happening.--unlikely given the symptoms but worth a gander
