    Stolen bike question

just had a random visit at 7am from a huge maori fella with more tattoos than i could count wanting to "buy my van",
Just a question for all the people that have had bikes go missing in the upper/central north island, did you have a similar thing happen before your bike went missing? Or am i being paranoid, stereotypical and racist??

My bike was in my van at the time he came round.......

It plays to worry a little and therefore ensure the bike is put away and the van locked.

I don’t know if stereotyping and racism is necessarily a factor, unless you wouldn’t be equally as suspicious of a clean-cut white guy scoping your van at 7am.

I'll never get why people only ever post half the story on threads like this....

    1. Was the Van for sale?
    2. Was the Van somewhere highly visible? (ie. driveway/on the street)
    3. Do you have obvious For Sale signs on it?

If any of those are true then no I wouldn't be suss as he might just have been passing and seen it, not had any credit so knocked on the door.
If all those are NOT the case, then yeah I'd be suspicious as heck as if it's not the bike he's after, why the hell is ANYONE scoping out a random, not for sale van at 7am?

We often have vehicles for sale and people are generally just bloody idiots IMHO cause even when there is nothing out there, we get asshats knocking on the door at all sorts of random hours, from 6am to midnight (like they think we might have nothing better to do) asking about them.
I'm really rude to people who don't call first or who turn up at silly times without prior arrangement.
They get an even ruder response where there isn't even a car out with a sign on it LOL

No its not for sale, theres no for sale sign on it, i live off the main road, the guy knew my name, when i asked how he knew my name he changed the subject, he said he wanted it for parts for his broken down van, but when i asked what van he had, again the subject changed,
then he told me about some other vans he knew of in hamilton and asked if they were my mates, said they all had bikes like me, so again i asked where he got all this info from, again he deflected,

Maybe this is all innocent and he realy wanted to buy my van, but to me the circumstances and the lack of answers to my questions had me a little suspicious, so i was just asking if anyone else had a similar thing happen before bikes were taken or houses were robed,

Oh and he said he was from up north but wouldnt say from where.......

Given that info id be rather concerned and would be right down a full description of the guy while its still fresh in your mind just in case sounds rather suspect to me but hey ive hay 2 stolen who knows maybe he was hoping you didn't answer the door or where still asleep saw you weren't so tried to cover it up as to why he was on your property. But id be hiding my bike for a while and making sure the van is disabled at night.

Not worth the risk, dodgy as fuck. Go stash it at your folks place or something. I'd rather deal with having to make 2 extra trips each time you want to go ride, than have my bike stolen.

Now, if you had actually bothered to post all of that the first time, you might have got better answers.......

Yes, I'd have considered that suspicious enough to text a mate while he was chatting to send the cops round........ Hope you reported it and got a rego off whatever vehicle he arrived in.

I wouldn't think you paranoid, a 7am visit is a time that you would normally be at work or on the way? If there was no answer it would have been the ideal time to have a quick snoop around. He knew your name so if any neighbor bailed him up he would say he was just looking for you. When my house go done a couple of years ago the cops said that one guy would come around in the morning dressed nice with a clipboard (survey or something) finding out if people were home. They got busted because a 14 year old girl was skipping school and didn't want to answer the door to a big Maori bloke. When they came back she hid in the closet and called the cops.
It is only $300 or so to insure a dirt bike per year, well worth it I'd say.
