We all know that RD drivers are a hazard. They're stop-start, use both sides of the road and are often distracted. It wouldn't be the first time I have come round a corner to find the RD van coming the other way - on my side of the road. And reluctant to move over.
I thought I was pretty clued up about these dudes - well the ones in areas I commonly ride through anyway. But I had a timely reminder this morning out the west side of town with a driver I had not encountered before.
Whilst it was not particularly dangerous, it did make me think again. This guy was exiting a driveway on my side of the road as I rounded a corner. Usually a vehicle doing that will pause until the oncoming traffic clears. This guy just kept on truckin'. Avoided him without bother - fortunately there was nothing coming t'other way as I occupied, briefly, the wrong side of the road and there was room to stop had I needed to. And he did eventually pause - once he was well out into the road. But like I said, a timely reminder.
Moral of the story: Never assume anything. Especially about RD vans.
