"Common courtesy" is NOT a requirement of law.
Aside from the extreme likelyhood of both you, and the cyclists, ending up in a pile on the road.
(That could be seen as your undoing) ... running into the back of a group of cyclists you have seen a few hundred metres prior to the collision ... could not be seen as entirely in your favour in court.
Should you wish to argue the point ... do it ... and let us know how you got on.

You are wrong. The first part is correct but you fail when it comes to the responsibility to other road users. They have the same responsibility as the other road users. See post #14. No one has the right to imped other road users. All have the responsibility to kept left and let others past if they are slower. This negates the 2 abreast when other road users need to pass, it makes two abreast unsafe. The bit about being safe doesn't say safe for the cyclists only, it must be safe for all road users meaning others must be able to get safely past.
HEHE
My point was that I don't care if they want to ride single file or side by side. As long as it is safe to do so. Obviously on a wide streatch of road will be safer then narrow one lane country road. My point was more to do with how they act in town with no helmets, no lights and running red lights when they feel like it. And their attitude towards other road users.
I've spent my money on bikes, booze and babes. The rest I've wasted....
No, we are obviously imagining quite different scenarios. I have no intention of EVER running a cyclist of the road.
The premise was that some cyclists ahead of me in single file suddenly changed to two abreast as I was approaching. I envisioned this to be at a point where I would be unable or it would be very difficult to take evasive action. I am talking about being in a car btw.
Even if I did get in the shit I would prefer that to being the cyclist I had just run over.
As with most cases in transport law ...it is the responsibility of the following vehicle(s) to pass the vehicle(s) ahead of them safely.
If ... in overtaking ... if it is unsafe to pass another vehicle ... it is illegal to do so.
The Road Code states you should "Share the Road" ... not take priority of/on the road ...
Those that choose to take the view of the OP ... are taking the choice to only observe/claim breach of the laws and rules that they find (in)convenient at the time.
