You meet the strangest people in Gore

this, in essence is exactly it. there are better ways to decide on the quality/safety of your riding.
One such technique is holding a green bean, or a coffee bean or similar between your teeth when you go out for a wee ride. If you clench up and break the bean, you'll probably realise that you are quite a bit more tense than you think, and it can make you rethink your approach, and rethink your ability.

Often people have no idea they are near the end of their ability until a tyre goes sideways and its too late, their are far more practical ways to discover the true limits of your abilities.

Another way to know you're doing it wrong/riding too hard is when you get sore forearms. Possible even on a short blast, used to happen to me often, then I found out I was being a n00b.
If you die also, this usually dictates you're riding out of your abilities.

Seems to work well for me, I had the GN on the back wheel doing 140 the other day, lane splitting, some pregnant wench waved her fist at me so I bit her face off.

Just make sure you got the right message from that thread, ,please.The guy had the nuts to come here and tell us what happened, we/most of us hope he has learn't from his rather serious and painful experience and that others coming up the scale do so as well without the pain.
