Misbehaving fuel gauge?

The fuel gauge on my FJ1100 has started to play up. It used to be very steady anfd accurate, however I had the fairing off last night and now if wobbles around a bit as I am riding and oddly fluctuates when I have an indicator on. I am suspecting a dodgy earth - any other ideas?

Fuel gauge on FJ's accurate ... (think more of it as the FJ's educated guess)

There is the connector you have to pull apart at the rear of the tank if you want to take the tank off the bike. Check that ... and the fuel float switch unit on the tank is a sealed unit. But it may have a bared section of wire. (but I doubt it ... check anyway)

FJ fuel gauges fluctuate a bit ... it will have a fuel light as well (???) trust that more.

But generally they do settle eventually after a FULL tank of gas ..... maybe ...

It has been pretty well behaved - well until I pulled the fairing off last night. What I will do is clean and check that connector as well.

Mine has it's moments of good behaviour too ... the length of which vary.

Check the earth of the front indicators as well as the wire from the connector to the fuel float switch. Try to earth them away from the tank. See if that helps. Look inside the tank at the float itself and check it is ok.

Oh, that may well be it. I have a rough and ready earth for some high viz LED 'bullets' - that may well be the cause.

I posted this elesewhere, but her goes - two for one!

The Piaggio Fly scooter I have as an around town bike had a fuel gauge problem when I bought it at 5000kms as an insurance write off. The gauge seemed to show anything it liked!
When I took the sender to pieces I discovered it used a displacer rather than a float, but the displacer did need to move slightly against a spring to register the level.
When the scooter was made in China, some assembly worker had left threads of glue obstructing the displacer movement & causing random jamming.
It was an easy fix, but I bet there are other bikes out there with similar issues.
