    Questions about zzr250 exhaust

    So I recently bought a 91 ZZR250 which came with dual dented up/scratched up/generally bad shape exhausts. My question is, apart from buying straight from oversea shops for direct bolt on kit, am I able to use another bike's exhaust? Since I'm going to change the exhaust, might as well try and make it sound better as it sounds like a lawnmower at the moment. Thanks and sorry about the noob question, new to the bike scene

    Measure the size of the pipe where they slip on to the headers (assuming they slip on)
    Go from there.
    You could cheat and make stainless sleeves for the mufflers...has worked for me before, looks neat too.

    As for sound...well, a de-baffle is simple and the ZZR motors sound a bit neat when a little bit loud

    Regarding the de-baffle, is it something that could possibly be done DIY? or will it have to be through a shop?

    That all depends on how the exhaust is made quiet.
    And how many tools you have access to and how much you enjoy bashing shit up.

    Often you can shine a torch down the muffler and see if there are any plates in the main core blocking flow (My ZZR400 and VT250 pipes were like this) if so, you can get a nice long pointed bar and bash a hole in 'em.
    Otherwise, chop the end of the muffler off and shorten the whole unit, or remove some baffles, then weld the end back on (piss easy if they rivet on!)

    If you wanted something a bit more modern looking and wouldn't mind paying a shop some $$$ I have a GSX-R1000K7 left hand muffler you can have, de-baffle that and have it welded on

    So I shined a torched in through and there's really nothing blocking the flow, just a really tiny hole (2 cm radius or so) at the end of each muffler.

    That GSX-R1000K7 muffler looks amazing :O do you reckon it's possible to get a shop to route the right hand piping with the left hand into a Y-pipe before reaching the muffler?

    You could grab a 10mm drill bit and drill holes around that central one on the end of the muffler

    Yes, making it 2 in to 1 is possible, I had the exhaust on that bike modified from 4-2 to 4-1 (it exits on the other side now instead of both)


    Word of warning:
    Changing how the exhaust flows will most likely end up in you needing to re-tune the carbs, this in itself is do-able with basic tools to an acceptable level.
    If you were nearer to the Manawatu I'd be more than happy to re-jet the carbs for free

    I just took off the left exhaust to measure the pipe diameter and found out that, without the exhaust pushing down the centre stand, the centre stand hits the chain. so if I did have that exhaust put on 2-1 onto the left side, would it be easier just to simply remove the centre stand?

    Re-jetting could be an excuse to have a road trip down from Rotorua to Manawatu

    So I spent a couple of hours riding around town and asking every motorbike and exhaust shop. Turns out only 1 could possibly but will be a job and a half as he's never done it before, and it would cost no less than 300-400.
    Maybe I could arrange a day trip to Manawatu and maybe buy the exhaust from you while finding a shop who can put it on there at Manawatu? Sorry, I'd rather PM you this but the site won't let me yet Thanks!

    If I had a welder I'd do it myself! I've never actually had an exhaust built at a shop, it's usually borrowing a welder or a mate being a GC.
    Looking at pics of the standard exhaust headers on google, it looks piss easy too.

    Theoretically it shouldn't be too hard to get a bend pipe and weld one pipe into the other but it's not a very common thing so I guess that's why all the shops are so hesitant about it
    Do you think there is someone in Manawatu who can do it? Also how much would you be willing to part with the exhaust? You could PM me if you like. And also is it Manawatu Palmerston North?

    Any of the bike shops should be able to supply a aftermarket pair of mufflers - around a hundred a pop. Generally reverse megaphone style - you can get a short one (loud) or long. In chrome only. There are a couple of designs around, one you can remove the internals and muck arround making it easier to adjust the sound level with packing inserts etc. Asian made but pretty good quality externally. Internals require a decent muffler packing as they come wrapped in belly-button fluff and the packing blows out very quick. They come with collars to fit most headers.

    The plan at the moment is I've found someone who can do a 2-1 conversion and now all I need is a nice single muffler
