Using a credit card for petrol?

I cant remember ever using my credit card for purchasing petrol. I have heard however, that if I did, the svc stn will take an extra dollop of credit on top of the amount of petrol purchased.

Has anyone ever had this happen? If so, why?

I remember this being in the news awhile ago. I think there was a change in legislation that allowed business to pass on the fee of using a credit card that they previously had to pay themselves.

Five independently owned BP stations in Wellington may be the first businesses in the country to pass on credit card transaction costs to their customers.

The stations were the first businesses to take advantage of being able to put a surcharge on credit card usage, TVNZ reported.

The fee sees customers pay 60c extra for every transaction under $30 and 90c for every transaction over $30.

Credit card companies charge retailers a transaction cost and previously that fee was not able to be passed on to the customer.

However, last year the Commerce Commission agreed with financial institutions that merchants should be able to surcharge customers using credit cards.

In Hamiltron, the BP on Te Rapa was under private ownership. They struggled to compete with the BP owned stations. They ended up passing on the CC charges when the law got changed to allow it. It went under 6 months later and is now a car yard. They can charge you a fee BUT they must be very clear that an additional fee will be charged

i use my credit card (visa) at shellpetrol stations,so i get fly buys on the petrol purchase and the credit card transaction.I pay the balance monthly.I have never beens charged extra

Caltex has the surcharge.

Z doesn't. I fill at Z almost every time, plus flybuys etc. Don't think BP has surcharge (and if you have the AA smartfuel, there's discounts there)

My reason for posting, was a long time ago, I heard of a person being charged a huge surcharge at a petrol stn in case the card transaction was dishonered. I must have got the story wrong.

Most people fill up first, then go in to pay and wouldn't find out about any extra charge untill they swiped the card in most cases. 90c is nothing really, if you are looking at a $90 fill up.

A bank manager told me once, the cheapest way to purchase was to use the credit card, and pay the lot before the due date for interest.

Someone told me once that those self serve pumps at New World and Pak n Save will hold $150 as soon as you swipe and it takes a while to release the hold. This person didn't know that and they had $160 in their account. They put $80 of petrol in their car and then went to buy something elsewhere for $40 but it declined! She rang the bank and the process was explained. Maybe that's what you heard. Makes sense though

Not me... they even pay me to use their card (via hot points or whatever it is the wife has me collecting for her...)
