MEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeee! Was a great track, would've been a blast on a proper dirt bike with proper dirt tyres. I was a roaming marshal 'cos I'm just not race fit at the moment. I didn't do the single track bits they'd cut (and one was later removed from the course) but did most of it twice and it was pretty tiring on the 640. Once the rain stopped the track started to dry out and the lack of liquid sunshine meant you could see. Some of the muddy bits became quite tacky. I stalled coming down the Hurricane Hill bypass and could not push the bike down hill due to the sticky mud.

There are so many changed/closed/new tracks in there it's not funny. Some places are quite hard to recognise due to logging and the changed roads. It was great to do some new stuff in there. Of note was a great long hill climb from the fords down the bottom of Teal Valley almost straight up to Central Rd near Teal Saddle. Fsckin' A! It will be great riding in there for while, now that the track has been bedded in
    Cheers,
    Colin

It is going to be good in there on the (relatively) lighter bikes

There were some really cool joiner tracks on the enduro course...

I didn't see much of the enduro course. Just drove up Central Rd to the checkpoint, and the station I was at all day was the "experts only" terrain test. NordieBro is usually very encouraging, but he came out of there the first time and said, "it's not 640 territory". Certainly not in the howling rain, it isn't. Is a good tree root test

    Rainbow Skifield ride

I made the most of the sun today and did my planned excursion down to Rainbow Skifield. The skifield road report was all good so I gapped it from town mid morning and rode down there via a few select gravel "shortcuts".
Well worth the day ride, even if ya don't go boarding/skiing, just to soak up the sun, have a coffee, and keep an eye on the keas. A few punters commented how the bike would be a great way to get up the hill, I kinda agreed.

I love this view of the access road

Hmmm, how to get permission to get up this one in summer? Hello, DOC St Arnaud? .....can I ride up the West Bowl trail to the summit?

Yep, road totally clear of ice/snow pack. Bloody tempting to ride up the West Bowl track in photo, but I'm sure they would seek and destroy me if I did.
General mid-week crowd up there, certainly not a zoo. Primo spring conditions, 80cm base on main trails.
Will prolly get busy again in school holidays.

I'll tag along! Always wanted to go to the skifield but never been there are the right time i.e. when open.

Sort it out and "they will come"

It was a ride I organised back in 2009 (wow, doesn't time fly when there's a new arrival in the house)
Here' s the linky with route and summits http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...hlight=summits
Route could easily be modified without too much effort, but permission for forestry land access is the biggest hassle. I would've liked to have done Beeby's Knob down at St Arnaud, and also Rainbow Skifield, but it seems DOC don't like to open locked gates for motorsickles.

You just tell them you can give them the reg numbers for the vehicles on the trip if they need them

Yeah bro, I've already been blown off that hill. We missed that on the original route because it was a bit too far off the main route, more backtracking involved.
