No, there is no money to be made here by comparison.
Wheddle appears to be an immature product released too early. They also appear to have skipped over getting real people to test the functionality, and simple things like testing the UI for bugs. Slow and being down for maintenance are other crimes already committed.
They will have to lift their game quite a bit very quickly; I don't envy their dev team for the next month.
I find it appalling how closely they've copied TradeMe. Woo hoo they added a video option to listings. Such a missed opportunity.
Like under the "Computers" section, they've copied the "PDAs and Handhelds" section off TradeMe, when today they'd be better off with a "Tablets" section.
I also wonder if they've missed something that will help them get critical mass. I've bought something like 50 things off TradeMe, but never sold anything. If there are many people like me, then are are many people who don't care about success fees. So even if sellers go to the new site, buyers may not.
Unless everyone goes to the new site (and then the new one that comes next) then we all have to look in multiple places to buy and or sell stuff. It's tricky, because we don't want any business to have a monopoly, but it's a bit of a pain to have two auction sites that are essentially the same thing. The new site needs much more to differentiate itself, more than being a TradeMe clone with a few extra little features (which TradeMe could add themselves (e.g. those videos) if they turn out to be drawcards).
P.S. Ignore me. When TradeMe started, and there were news items about it (e.g. looking for investors) I said "Meh. There's already e-bay, this'll never work". And of course they all became very very rich.

The site appears to be somewhat more functional this morning, still doesn't remember my login/password though![]()

I thought this was the case when I went to list a few things last night. To start with I couldn't select a category. Eventually I got it but no bike gear. I thought I'd wait to try tonight.
Ah the old skool days! Didn't they try to go online and found no one "got it"? Then TM persevered...
For a product that's trying to take down a very very big player I certainly don't see this as a bad thing. Kiwi's hate change (we're moron's) so if they incriminate changes slowly while the faithful gets used to it, makes the most sense.
Also I'd imagine they would have said to the dev team, "copy this site but add this and this". Would save a CRAP load of money because, let's face it, they're gonna need it for the advertising.
This was annoying me the most last night. Wasn't a big deal though, just a little niggling annoyance.

is it spelt with a WH to be culturally sensitive?
In my own experiences, no amount of preparation fully prepares you for the actual. It's only graduations of failure and the level in which you rise to where you intended.
Anyone here use Trademe the very day or week it came out? At a rough guess... it was probably shit.
Edit -
FYI... on Wheedle usernames and passwords are still being stored in plain text, in a cookie.

haha love how they posted in the 'forum'. Just that same as posting about Apple Maps in the Android Forum. Completely irrelevant and the only help it'll be is to continue with the "no one can beat our beloved leader" bashing.
Although, I suppose there's not many other places non-tech savvy people would read about that sort of thing.
The password issue was one of the first things Geekzone users found. Doesn't bother me personally as I've got no credit card details stored and I have different passwords (Passwords 101). Hell, the Playstation network shenanigans didn't even bother me. Still a pretty dumb thing not to think of on Wheedles part.
I remember when it was cheap!
But you're totally right. There is only so much you can sort out with closed testing (password protection should have been one of them). It's amazing how much I've had to change designs based on a few "special" people in the office once I've done testing with normal people.
That's a good link. I can't remember any of the previous versions![]()
Wow, now Wheedle is down indefinitely...
