It's a standard fitting installed by most manufacturers to catch condensation. Removal of such usually means BLUE will make an appearance ... with flashing lights ... (for effect)

I find that glass pack mufflers create a shit load of steam in the mornings.
The dustbin sized one on my 1300 makes enough steam on mid winter mornings to make a passable impression of a steam train.
