You do well to get your gear down to that size. I am a kitchen sink kind of fella, lots of fishing gear, cooking/camping/sleeping gear and an over-the-top amount of bike tools and spares. Carrying all that gear is hard work sometimes, lots of sweating in the rough stuff, but when you need/want something and you have it, life is good =)
With the DB1K, being able to leave all your excess gear in Fairlie and pick it up again on day 2 as you loop back is bloody great. Will be riding in a group that will be going at a fairly quick pace this year so going ultra minimal; stripping boxes etc off bike, taking only tools and basics/essentials plus a small backpack.
Following Ryan's lead ~ I purchased the E-12 bags from Wolfman....Will be giving them their first workout this weekend. Fit and finish look top notch, and as Ryan says, they stay put on the bike...

This year was a vast improvement over my first. I made a carrier which worked sweet and ment i could enjoy the ride instead of trying to keep my belongings on the bike. A giant loop style luggage system would be used for more than the dusty and i'm sure id survive without it.
So ya going to give it a nudge this year Josh? The first year i did it (2011) the group was a bit big and someone was always having a issue and we were over 30 hours. 2012, K14 and I just plodded along at a good pace and did it in just over 23, not bad when K14 had next to nil off road experience. This year i'll be riding with my Bro and his mate on big heavy pigs (BMW100GS and Cagiva Navigator) so i mite just get fed up with them and do my own thingi dont think the sub 24hr target will be met in 2013!

What's the belly protection like on the Navigator? Pictures of them look like it has a soft bit exposed where the rocks might get it (in stock trim).
Could be worth chasing that with a camera but I'll be busy elsewhere on the ride I'm sure.
Think there's a DL1000 in the rider list too. Hat's off to them all, armoured up Transalp is about as big n heavy as I will ever take (last DB), in fact I expect I'll be on the 250 from this one forward..
I'm using the E12' bags on the WR now thanks to Ryans input too.

I had a "look alike" giant loop bag made last year for the DB1K and used it very succesfully. I had a few mods made to it such as a little larger than the genuine one as well as the zipper run the total length of the bag and the total cost to have this made was $200.00. I have since then gone over to the Wolfman saddle bag arrangement so put the bag on Trademe a few weeks ago, oddly it took a couple of weeks to sell for $180.00. Cant seem to understand why people stuggled to pay $180 when some pay up to $600 for what is in my opinion an inferior product to the one that was proffesionally made here in NZ.
PS: The company who made mine is based in Auckland and is a profesional upholsterer. (unlike my less proffesional spelling)
Life is about having fun.
I'm with CooneyR on the wolfman bags - IMO the're the bees knees - even for old guys like me who drop their DR a lot - planning on buying wolfman racks for the new to me R1200GS - have fun on the Dusty you lucky fellows![]()
