Isle of Man TT or Catalunya MotoGP

Gidday all,

Just throwing it out there, but has anyone been to either the Isle of Man TT or Catalunya MotoGP? I'll be there this year at both these events and was wondering if anyone could give some advice... I was hoping if anyone could point out the best place to watch the TT (otherwise I'll just make friends with the locals), or the best way to get too and from Circuit de Catalunya.

How long are you going to the Isle of Man for?

Basically they ride every other day and you get three or four events in a day. If you're going for the full two weeks I'd watch from the pit straight on the first day of practice. Second day of practice you'll want some wheels to explore the track, it doesn't take very long to figure out what places are going to be good for viewing. Over two weeks you'll get a lot of viewing in so it's not worth stressing about - some places are better than others but it depends what you're into. My first days racing I watched from Ballaugh Bridge in the morning, then went up onto the mountain via a back road (goat track) and watch some racing up there. Second days racing I spent the whole day up at the Goose Neck. Third day (final days racing) was rained out.

Basically my advice is this:
Sort your lunch the day before, there are a number of supermarkets around the place and it's quite affordable.
Pack warm and waterproof clothing, but also dress so that you can get some layers off if it warms up. It's an island in the middle of the Irish Sea - the weather can change very fast.
Don't be afraid to leave early to get a spot. Lots of people leave within an hour of the track closing and that's just stupid. All the accidents that happened while I was there were people rushing to get to view points because they left too late - also depending on how you're getting around you may well need to park up etc before hand. There is public transport around the place but I had a rental car so didn't use it.
Be patient. There are a lot of delays due to weather and a multitude of other variables - take something with you that you can potentially pass the day with as you may end up stuck in place well into the evening - so take appropriate amounts of food too.
Relax and enjoy it, there is A LOT going on other than the racing and it's a great wee holiday to have.

Also I believe rachprice (i think thats her user name) has been to Catalunya twice so she should be able to help on that one. Only thing I know is that the euro transport is like 8euro a day for a pass, so DON'T rent a car.

I'm there for all of the race week and glad I sorted out accommodation aaages ago. Glad you mentioned the gear, food and entertainment as I completely overlooked those.

I take the train, Montmello is about 30mins away and then I walk from there . It's a pleasant 15 min walk and there's plenty of people doing the same.

i would love to get over there when they have say 2 or 3 weekends in a row,rent a bike,take in some alpine passes see a couple of gps and maybe a round of the superbikes as well buy a bike bring it back...make the most of the air fare!Is there a place that can give you a definitive answer on what you can bring back..the ltsa website is a bit vague

I used to like it when you got two GPs in two weeks but it's still a while to be away.(not that the wife complained too much) I seem to have settled into just one at a time and it works for me to be away about just over a week.

Nah. We were in Barcelona, but went to the GP at Valencia. She's also been to Brno and Phillip Island.
