Track bike race numbers

Hi, im building a pre89 race bike and doing the bodywork at the moment. Wondering about the race number. Do they get changed at all? With the space i have it would be better to paint the numbers on. Ive had a look on the web and it looks like some are permanently painted. Can i pick any number i want?
Strange question i know, but i havent been around the race seen at all.

hey Steve.....
there are a few things to consider... is it just going to be raced at the post classic association races or in club racing too? if it qualifies for another formula class... you can choose what number board you prefer.. ie. Pre89 400 qualifies for F3 and Pre '89 jnr...
check out MNZ's website which has the regulations for number board colours....

most people keep their MNZ allocated number so dont change them.
We usually use vinyl backing then vinyl number as its easier to apply, repair and reapply

if you chose a posty number... you need to get it allocated by the post classic association.
if you choose a MNZ class race number and class... you can call MNZ and see what numbers are free and choose one

Thanks Nicksta, that does help. I havent realy decided the seriousness of racing yet. Just wanna have some legal fun, track days. I love older bikes so i got a 89 to muck about with.
So i should leave enough room for 2 numbers really and just apply vinyl race numbers as needed over the top of the clear coat eh?

yip and make sure the numbers are clearly visible and in the font specified in the rule book.
There's a number of clowns out there who think the only reason that numbers are on bikes is to look cool in the photos.
fact is they're the lifeline if you've got a machine malfunction that you don't know about and if a track official see's it reads your number quick and easy then they can get you off the track ASAP before it catches you or someone else.
simple eh!
most postie bikes are from an era where numbers fitted well so you're in luck there, see ya at the track

nah, truth is I personally know of quite a few Postie register members spread across the south Island from Nelson, Blenheim, Invergiggle, te Anau, Chch, Q Town, Dunedin.

No intention of shooting him down - he'll be made very wecome whichever club he decides to run with or join.

Yes. i do know of quite a few members here - but as far as I know you have no designated SI rep. With CAMS active and healthy there's probably no need either. The SI guys are quite welcome to join NZPCRA - but it gets them nothing within the SI.

For those of you interested in coming South have a look on CAMS website for upcoming events. I understand next year there's a big meeting at Levels timed to match the Burt Munro - and CAMS are investigating assistance with transport.
Having said that, help has been available previously and response has been very poor...Aussie is obviously more attractive
I also understand that there were discussions between the clubs at the last MNZ conference. Any progress has to be maintained....

I reckon has got to be the way ahead long term. All in the same game, even if slightly different flavours.

As far as i can tell the No1 seems to be randomly chosen, so that should be Ok to use Al ? :-), nice easy single strip of duct tape too.......

But i saw you squinting at your cellphone when trying to read that 0900 PORN number the other day :-) , - how the heck do you expect to read race bike numbers......... (albiet postie bikes that may not be whizzing by quite as fast.......)

Thats why i was always #74 .... 14, 7 , 4 , 71 always an option i thought.

Most Postie bikes are Jappa's (as in fast enough) so you dont have to worry about slow European Diesel's.
